Does Wow Keywords have a moat?

Kinda.

36/100 · Shallow moat

“The app is a few weeks of work, and the free 'vibe-aso' skill shows how easy that is. Dan Kulkov's 51K X followers drove $9K in four days.”

01/The verdict

Wow Keywords is a one-time-purchase desktop app (Mac, Windows beta) for App Store keyword research, rank tracking and listing optimization. App developers pay $49 to $99 once.

The product is a local app that reads App Store data and hands the thinking to the user's own Claude Code, Codex or Ollama. A capable builder can match it in weeks, and the founder himself gives away a free Claude Code ASO skill. What protects it is Dan Kulkov's audience (about 51K on X, 1K on LinkedIn, a newsletter, a record of indie products). It has sold roughly $9K in its first days with no SEO, no reviews and no lock-in.

02/2 moats

Time won't do it

Dan Kulkov (@DanKulkov) has about 51K X followers and 26K posts. He is a known indie maker (MakerBox, FounderPal, Weekly Dan newsletter, podcasts) who talks about ASO and iOS growth in public. The Creators Toolbox launch post and about $9.2K in verified revenue came within days of launch (Oct 24), which points to his audience.

To cross it: A challenger can copy the app but not the audience, so they would have to build their own following among app developers or pay for ads and influencers.

~6 mo to cross

The site has a blog and is listed on Creators Toolbox, but the domain rating is 0 and it is days old. Search traffic and reviews are not yet a factor.

To cross it: Publish ASO content and comparisons that rank for keyword research queries, or get listed on indie directories and Product Hunt.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The keyword finding, rank tracking and difficulty scoring that ASO tools such as Astro and AppTweak already sell
  • The AI layer, which just calls the user's own Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode or Ollama
  • The $49 to $99 lifetime price and local-first keyword database
  • The listing audit and localization into 50+ storefronts, which is prompts plus Apple's public storefront data

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut it with a free or open-source Claude Code skill for ASO (the founder's own 'vibe-aso' already shows the path)
  • Offer a hosted web version with teams, shared dashboards and monthly volume data for agencies, who dislike desktop-only lifetime apps
  • Win on the Apple Search Ads and keyword volume data quality, which a one-person local app likely estimates
  • Target Android and Google Play, or a specific niche such as games or health apps, with a focused tool

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only worth it with an audience of app developers or a clearly better keyword data source. Otherwise you are competing with free AI skills and cheap tools like Astro and Appfigures.
