Does LLM Gateway have a moat?

No.

24/100 · Moatless

“Its pitch is a two-line base URL swap from OpenRouter. Leaving LLM Gateway for Vercel's zero-markup gateway is the same two lines.”

01/The verdict

An OpenAI-compatible API that routes to 250+ models across 40+ providers. Developers pay a 5% fee on credit top-ups, buy flat-price DevPass coding plans or Lounge chat plans, and larger teams buy an Enterprise licence.

The traction is real: about $1M in verified revenue in 16 months and $250K in August 2026 alone. But much of that is likely inference passed through to providers at a 5% fee, and customers can leave with a two-line config change. What protects it is a SOC 2 Type II report, work on 40+ provider adapters, a 1.6k-star AGPLv3 repo and content SEO. A funded challenger can match all of that in a quarter, and Vercel, Cloudflare and OpenRouter already have.

02/3 moats

~4 mo to cross

LLM Gateway says it is SOC 2 Type II compliant. It sells an Enterprise plan with audit logs and rules on which providers can be used by country, data retention and training. Samsung and Harvard appear among its listed users.

To cross it: Use Vanta or Drata to get a SOC 2 Type I report in a few weeks, then run the observation window for Type II, which takes about 3 to 6 months.

~6 mo to cross

Domain rating is 57. The site runs a content engine of OpenRouter-alternative and comparison posts. It has a 1.6k-star, 177-fork GitHub repo and a Discord. The founders have small audiences: the brand account has about 1.5k X followers and Smakosh has about 1.7k GitHub followers.

To cross it: Publish the same comparison and migration pages and post an open-source repo to HN and Reddit. OmniRoute shows a gateway repo can reach tens of thousands of stars.

~2 mo to cross

It supports 40+ providers and 250+ models, including Bedrock, Vertex, Azure, Fireworks and video models such as Veo and KLING. It also ships an AI SDK provider, a CLI, an MCP server and a coding agent forked from opencode.

To cross it: Most providers are OpenAI-compatible. Fork LiteLLM or OmniRoute's adapters and keep up with new model releases.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The core router, key management and cost dashboard, which LiteLLM, Portkey and OmniRoute already give away as open source
  • The 5% top-up fee, which Vercel AI Gateway undercuts with zero markup on tokens
  • DevPass flat-price coding plans, which are a pricing wrapper on resold inference that anyone with provider credits can copy
  • A model catalog and failover logic that any OpenAI-compatible proxy can match

How you'd go after it

  • Charge zero markup and make money from enterprise governance, which is how Vercel and Cloudflare already compete
  • Win regulated buyers with EU-only or on-prem routing plus HIPAA, which LLM Gateway does not advertise
  • Undercut DevPass with cheaper coding-agent plans built on discounted open-weight model capacity, such as Kimi, GLM or Qwen hosts
  • Offer a permissive MIT licence instead of AGPLv3 to win teams that embed the gateway in their own products

04/Build against it?

Stay away

There are dozens of gateways, OpenRouter is reportedly being bought by Stripe, and Vercel and Cloudflare charge no markup. Fees are falling toward zero and switching takes minutes. Only consider it with a specific edge: a compliance niche, such as EU or healthcare data residency, or exclusive cheap inference supply.
