01/The verdict

Chrome extension that uses AI to answer questions in online quizzes, exams and homework (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle). Students pay $0.99 for a trial, then $9.99 a week.

CheatMate is a thin AI layer over screen reading and a keyboard shortcut. Its Chrome Web Store listing shows about 2,000 users and a 2.8 rating from 14 reviews. The founder has about 1,500 X followers, and the domain rating is 6. The $7.1k MRR comes from 406 weekly subscribers, which looks like paid-ad traffic with no lock-in. The business is also listed for sale at $200k, and revenue fell from $9.3k in Dec 2025 to $3.6k in Jul 2026.

02/1 moat

~3 mo to cross

The Chrome Web Store listing has about 2,000 users. It is listed under a generic name, Study Buddy. The site has a domain rating of 6, so there is little SEO to speak of.

To cross it: Publish a similar extension and buy TikTok or Instagram ads aimed at students. This costs money and a few weeks.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The AI answer pipeline. Any LLM with a screenshot or DOM read does the same job.
  • The Chrome extension and the double-click or shortcut UX.
  • The pricing model of a $0.99 trial that renews at $9.99 a week.
  • Compatibility claims for Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, D2L and Schoology. These are ordinary page scrapers.

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut the weekly price with a one-time or monthly plan. Weekly renewals tend to annoy users and cause chargebacks.
  • Ship as a desktop app or a mobile app. A rival could also offer overlays that stay hidden during screenshare, which a Chrome extension cannot do.
  • Target one niche, such as nursing or CS exams, with tuned accuracy.
  • Use student creators on TikTok and Reddit. The founder has no audience that a rival would have to match.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

It is a copyable wrapper in a crowded niche. It also carries the risk of a Chrome Web Store ban, Stripe account trouble, and universities or proctoring vendors fighting it. Only build it with a cheap paid-ad channel that you already own.
