Does Just a moment... have a moat?

Kinda.

42/100 · Shallow moat

“The ingredient checker is a 2-week build. Its 5-year curated product database and Google rankings pulling about 1.5M visits a month are not.”

01/The verdict

SkinSort is a skincare ingredient checker, product database, dupe finder and routine tracker. Consumers pay for a premium iOS/Android subscription, and the site also earns affiliate fees.

The tools are easy to rebuild with today's AI coding tools: ingredient analysis, filters, dupe matching and routine conflicts. What protects SkinSort is the slow-built part. It has a product database it has curated since 2020, covering about 34,000 ingredients and over 11,000 brands. That database feeds long-tail SEO pages that Similarweb ranks around #127 in Beauty and Cosmetics, with roughly 1.5M visits a month and about 60% of desktop traffic from organic search. Ingredient lists are mostly public, there's no lock-in, and it competes with INCIDecoder, Yuka and a stream of AI scanners, so a well-run challenger gets through in about a year.

02/3 moats

~15 mo to cross

Similarweb estimates about 1.5M visits a month and a #127 rank in Beauty and Cosmetics. Organic search drives about 60% of desktop visits, through thousands of product, brand, dupe and ingredient pages. Similarweb also lists it as the top competitor to INCIDecoder.

To cross it: Publish a comparable programmatic catalog of products, dupes and ingredients, then spend 12 to 18 months earning domain authority and backlinks from Reddit and creators.

~6 mo to cross

The founders say the database took a long time to build and that they still check every product users submit. It now spans about 34,000 ingredients and brands like MAC (939 products) and Sephora Collection (693).

To cross it: Scrape INCI lists from retailers and Open Beauty Facts, then use LLM-assisted cleanup plus a user-submission loop to reach similar coverage in a few months.

~12 mo to cross

The iOS app has 4.7 stars from 6.4K ratings, Google Play has 4.5 stars from about 3.4K reviews, and the site claims 700,000+ users. It is recommended on Reddit skincare subs and by TikTok skincare creators.

To cross it: Win over skincare subreddits and TikTok creators with more accurate, more transparent scoring over a year or so.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Ingredient analyzer, fungal-acne and comedogenic flags, and 60+ search filters
  • Dupe finder based on ingredient-list similarity
  • Routine builder with conflict warnings, and barcode scanning
  • Personalized product match scores

How you'd go after it

  • Build a scanner-first mobile app that is better in-store, with LLM explanations and photo OCR of ingredient labels, then grow it through TikTok skincare creators
  • Go after an underserved niche: K-beauty and J-beauty catalogs, non-English markets, or derm-backed acne and rosacea protocols
  • Undercut the premium subscription with a free tier funded entirely by affiliate revenue
  • Target the long-tail dupe and comparison searches where SkinSort's pages are thin or missing

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only worth it with a distribution edge, such as a skincare creator audience or a strong non-English or K-beauty catalog. SkinSort and INCIDecoder already hold the English SEO, and AI scanner clones are multiplying.
