Does Promptwatch have a moat?

Kinda.

27/100 · Shallow moat

“Prompt tracking is a 2-week build, and Profound ($1.8B valuation), Peec and Semrush already sell it. Promptwatch's main edge is data history.”

01/The verdict

An AI search visibility (GEO) platform that tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and others mention and cite a brand. Marketing teams and SEO agencies pay $75 to $579+ a month.

Promptwatch is a real business. It launched in April 2025, reportedly passed €2M ARR in about a year, raised roughly €7M (Arches Capital, then a €6M seed led by seed + speed) and claims 1,840+ brands, including Duolingo and Fireflies. But its core product sends prompts to LLMs, records mentions and citations, and adds crawler logs and content suggestions. It needs no platform approvals or certifications, and dozens of rivals already sell the same thing, some with far more money. What protects it is customers' visibility history, agency workflows and some SEO and content reach. A funded challenger can match all of that within months.

02/4 moats

~4 mo to cross

Customers build months of visibility trends, prompt sets, competitor benchmarks and client reports for agencies. Leaving means losing that history and setting up reporting again.

To cross it: Offer free prompt-set import and a historical backfill, and target new GEO buyers who have no history yet.

~6 mo to cross

It publishes aggregated citation research, such as a report that Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations is dropping, built from prompts it has run across its customer base. Profound and Semrush (126M prompts analyzed) have bigger datasets.

To cross it: Run a large prompt panel across engines for a few months and publish your own benchmark reports.

~6 mo to cross

A content engine of GEO comparison pages and 'best GEO tools' lists, talks at brightonSEO, live sessions with customers like Fireflies, and 21 G2 reviews at 4.6/5. Every rival runs the same comparison-page playbook.

To cross it: Out-publish it on GEO comparison and how-to content and win the agency audience at SEO conferences.

Funding

Shallow

~3 mo to cross

About $8M raised in total. That is enough to hire, but small next to Profound (over $300M raised, $1.8B valuation) and Peec AI (about $29M).

To cross it: Raise a seed round, or bootstrap a niche where large rounds don't matter.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Sending prompts to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude and parsing mentions, citations and sentiment
  • Dashboards for share of voice and competitor comparisons
  • AI crawler log analytics and content gap or article-generation suggestions
  • Agency multi-project plans and white-label reports

How you'd go after it

  • Sell to SEO agencies at a lower price per prompt or per client project, since reviewers point to Promptwatch's 5-project cap and per-project pricing
  • Bundle AI visibility into an existing SEO suite, as Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking already do, so buyers don't need a separate tool
  • Go vertical (local businesses, ecommerce or ChatGPT Shopping, B2B SaaS) with prompt libraries and fixes built for that niche
  • Compete on doing the fixes, not tracking: content, Reddit and PR work that improves citations, sold as a service

04/Build against it?

Stay away

The category is well funded and crowded, with Profound as a unicorn, Peec AI and the large SEO suites all selling it. Only enter with a niche wedge, such as an agency-first price model, a specific vertical, or an existing SEO audience you can bundle into.
