Does Polar have a moat?

Kinda.

44/100 · Shallow moat

“The billing code is a month's work. Becoming the legal seller in 100+ markets on Stripe's rails, with 10k GitHub stars behind you, takes a year.”

01/The verdict

A merchant of record for indie developers and AI SaaS. Developers pay 4% + 40c per transaction, and Polar handles checkout, subscriptions, usage billing, global sales tax and chargebacks.

Checkout, subscriptions and usage metering are well understood, and a strong builder can copy them quickly. The slow part is everything else: becoming the merchant of record, with tax registrations, a risk and fraud team, a payout setup that Stripe accepts, and enough developer trust to be the default pick. Creem, Dodo Payments and Fungies all got through that in about a year, and Stripe now sells its own merchant of record through Managed Payments and Lemon Squeezy. So the barrier is real but shallow, and the market is crowded.

02/4 moats

~18 mo to cross

The open-source repo polarsource/polar has about 10.4k stars and 134 contributors. Polar ships an official Better Auth plugin and adapters for Next.js and other frameworks, and it shows up in comparison posts from SaaS boilerplates like supastarter and TurboStarter.

To cross it: Build a popular open-source billing repo, then get into the auth libraries and boilerplate starters developers already use. It takes 1 to 2 years and success isn't guaranteed.

~9 mo to cross

As merchant of record, Polar resells software in over 100 markets and takes on the sales tax, VAT, fraud and chargeback liability. Sellers go through identity checks via Stripe Identity and payout reviews that take up to 14 days.

To cross it: Register for tax in the major jurisdictions, build an acceptable-use and risk team, and negotiate merchant-of-record terms with a processor. Creem and Dodo show this takes roughly 6 to 12 months.

~4 mo to cross

Polar holds the subscriptions, customer payment methods, license keys and benefits. Moving recurring customers to another merchant of record means migrating cards or asking customers to re-subscribe.

To cross it: Offer free subscription migration tooling and fee holidays aimed at Polar's smaller sellers.

Funding

Shallow

~6 mo to cross

Raised a $10M seed led by Accel in 2025, with Abstract, Mischief and well-known angels. Founder Birk Jernström previously led product for Shopify's Shop app.

To cross it: Raise a comparable seed round. Investors are actively funding merchant-of-record startups for AI developers.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Checkout, subscription and customer portal UI
  • Usage-based and token metering for AI products
  • SDKs and framework adapters (Next.js, Better Auth and others)
  • Headline price of 4% + 40c, which Dodo already matches

How you'd go after it

  • Target sellers Polar can't serve: it relies on Stripe Connect Express, so payouts only work in Stripe-supported countries. Dodo and others go after India, LatAm and Africa.
  • Win on onboarding and payout reliability: Polar's Trustpilot reviews include complaints about accounts frozen after approval.
  • Undercut on price or bundle free migration tools for indie SaaS that is outgrowing Polar.
  • Stripe Managed Payments can win simply by being the default for anyone already on Stripe.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Stripe, Paddle and at least three funded developer-focused merchants of record already compete on the same fees. Only try this with something Polar lacks, like payouts in countries Stripe doesn't support or a specific vertical.
