Oasis
Does Oasis have a moat?
Kinda.
30/100 · Shallow moat
“The scanner app is a 2-week build. The real gaps are a lab-test library and a TikTok audience, and money and months can close both.”

01/The verdict
Oasis is a consumer iOS/Android app that scores bottled water, filters, food, supplements and skincare for contaminants. Shoppers pay about $4.99 a week or $29.99 a year.
Oasis is a solo-founder app built with AI tools. It grew on viral short-form videos about bottled water and has about 13k App Store ratings (4.8), roughly 500k+ downloads and an estimated $23k to $50k a month in revenue. What a clone can't get in a weekend is its library of paid tests from independent labs, plus founder Cormac Hayden's content machine (32k followers on X, plus TikTok). A funded challenger can buy lab tests and build an audience in months. The category is crowded, and Oasis's scoring is publicly disputed, including a defamation suit from LMNT.
02/4 moats
Real
Oasis buys products off the shelf and sends them to accredited labs, paid for by subscriptions and a community 'fund and vote' testing program. It says it has rated thousands of waters, filters and other products. Much of the remaining data likely comes from public utility reports and published research.
To cross it: Set aside $100k to $300k for testing at independent labs on the 500 to 1,000 products people search for most, and fill the long tail with public water reports and published studies.
Real
Growth came from viral TikTok and short-form videos ranking bottled waters (@oasis.app). Its Android app was getting roughly 51k downloads a month at one point. Without that content engine it is just another scanner.
To cross it: Run a daily short-form channel with lab-result rankings, or pay wellness creators, until the challenger's own rankings get shared.
Shallow
Founder Cormac Hayden (@cormachayden_) has about 32k X followers and builds in public with Apple payout screenshots. That gives him reach in indie-hacker circles more than with the health shoppers who pay.
To cross it: Use a wellness creator with a larger consumer audience as the face of the app, not an indie-builder following.
Shallow
Its 4.8 rating on 13k reviews shows users trust it. But that trust is contested: a food scientist on TikTok called its data cherry-picked, Yahoo questioned whether it profits from panic, and LMNT has filed a defamation suit over its scores.
To cross it: Publish lab reports in full, use a scoring method a scientist would defend, and position on credibility against Oasis's controversies.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- Barcode scanning, a 0-100 score and paywall flows are standard app features any builder can copy.
- Ingredient flags and published research on PFAS, microplastics and seed oils are public and can be put together with an LLM.
- Tap water contaminant data by ZIP code is free from EWG and utility reports.
- A reviewer on Google Play says ChatGPT can mimic its ratings from a photo.
How you'd go after it
- Launch the trust-first version: full lab PDFs, scoring reviewed by scientists, no fearmongering. Target the users and brands put off by the LMNT suit and the 'panic' criticism.
- Pick a category Oasis covers lightly, like cosmetics, baby products or protein powders, and own its lab data and content.
- Keep scans free and charge less (Yuka Premium is about $10 to $20 a year), since users already complain Oasis locks everything behind a paywall.
- Sell testing and certification to clean brands, as Clean Label Project does, so brands pay for lab tests instead of consumers.
04/Build against it?
Only with an edge
Go in only if you have a lab-testing budget or a consumer wellness audience. Dozens of scanner apps already compete on TikTok, and scores you can't defend bring legal risk, as the LMNT suit shows.
