01/The verdict

Homy is a native SwiftUI Finder alternative for Mac. It shows files as thumbnails, takes plain-English search, does OCR on screenshots, finds duplicates and cleans up clutter. Mac users pay a one-time $9 to $29.

Homy is a 5 MB local app built on Apple frameworks: Spotlight metadata, Vision OCR, QuickLook thumbnails and file hashing for duplicates. Claude Code rebuilds that fast, and an open-source repo using the same name already exists. Its only real edge is distribution: the founder's roughly 9 to 12k X followers, his 8.1k Medium followers and his TryMacApps directory. But it's a one-time purchase with no lock-in, and the founder listed it for sale at $15k a day after launch.

Time won't do it

Mohit Vaswani (@hii_mohit) has about 9 to 12k X followers, builds in public and has 3 small exits. His launch posts and Medium articles drove most of the first month's $3,018. He has listed Homy for sale, so this edge likely won't go with the app.

To cross it: Build in public on X or Mac-indie Reddit, or launch from your own audience of a similar size.

~2 mo to cross

He owns TryMacApps, a Mac app directory, and writes Mac app roundups on Medium that can promote his own products. He also buys launch-site ad slots, such as a $149 slot to promote one of his apps. The domain rating is only 6, so SEO is not a real channel yet.

To cross it: Buy the same directory and newsletter slots, then write SEO comparison pages like 'Finder alternative' and 'search text in screenshots mac'.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Thumbnail shelves by file type and the Finder-style UI are standard SwiftUI and QuickLook work
  • Plain-English search can be rebuilt by turning queries into Spotlight filters with a small local or API model
  • Screenshot OCR, duplicate detection and download-source grouping all come free from Apple's Vision framework, file hashes and the 'Where from' metadata
  • The $9 one-time price is easy to match or undercut, and customers lose nothing by switching

How you'd go after it

  • Release a free open-source version, which Ali-5427/Homy on GitHub has already started, to catch Mac users who search GitHub and Hacker News
  • Go deeper on semantic search: local embeddings for image and document content, which DigUp and ManePaw already advertise
  • Bundle it into a cleaner or storage tool, or get onto Setapp, where buyers already pay for this kind of utility
  • Rank SEO pages for 'Finder alternative', 'duplicate finder mac' and 'search text in screenshots' while the domain rating is still 6

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Mac file utilities are crowded, one-time pricing caps revenue, Apple can ship these features in Finder or Spotlight, and the founder himself is selling after one month. Only worth it if you already have a Mac-user audience or a Setapp deal.
