01/The verdict

A podcast player for retail investors. It transcribes investment podcasts and surfaces companies getting unusual attention, bull and bear takes, and industry deep dives. Pre-launch waitlist, no pricing shown.

Every part of Gemhog runs on public inputs and commodity tools: public RSS feeds, Whisper-style transcription, and LLM ticker extraction and stance tagging. The founder looks like a solo indie hacker in Berlin (@pauljasperdev). We found no audience to speak of, no funding and no launch traction. Funded players already do this: AudioAlpha and Context Analytics sell podcast sentiment by ticker, Stockdrifts publishes podcast summaries, and Snipd runs an AI podcast player.

02/1 moat

Weeks

The heating-up feature compares this week's mentions with how often each company usually comes up, so it needs a history of past mentions. That history comes from transcribing back episodes, which anyone can do.

To cross it: Transcribe 6 to 12 months of back catalog for the top 100 investing podcasts in a few days, for a few hundred dollars of API costs.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Getting and transcribing episodes from public RSS feeds of shows like Motley Fool Money, Odd Lots and Prof G Markets
  • Pulling tickers out of transcripts and tagging each take bullish, bearish or mixed with an LLM
  • The spike detection that compares this week's mentions with a company's usual level
  • A mobile player UI that jumps to the timestamp of each take

How you'd go after it

  • Add it as a feature inside a product investors already use. Snipd, a broker app or a stock screener could ship this as a tab, and Stockdrifts already publishes podcast summaries.
  • Win on distribution: a free weekly newsletter or X account posting which companies podcasts suddenly started talking about, built into an audience before charging
  • Go after a niche Gemhog doesn't focus on, like German or other European investing podcasts, YouTube finfluencers, or crypto shows
  • Offer it free, supported by brokerage or newsletter affiliate deals, against any subscription Gemhog launches

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

The code is trivial and nobody can defend it. It's only worth going after if you already have an investor audience, like a finance newsletter, an X following or a podcast network partnership. Retail investors have a lot of free alternatives and rarely pay for this kind of tool.
