01/The verdict
Facebook, the social network at facebook.com, owned by Meta. Advertisers pay for reach. The TrustMRR listing is a $0 MRR Stripe account run by a founder with 530 X followers.
The site is Meta's Facebook, and I scored that product. The code is the easy part. The moat is the roughly 3 billion monthly users, their social graphs and Groups, and an ad business with millions of advertisers. The TrustMRR profile (founder @sellingshovels, $0 MRR, $110,955 all time) does not match Meta's Facebook and looks like a joke or placeholder. I did not run live searches, so the figures are from memory.
02/4 moats
Deep
Facebook has about 3 billion monthly users. Their friends, family, school and work connections, Groups and event history all live there. Each new user makes it more useful to the people they know.
To cross it: Get whole communities to move together, as Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp did, which has beaten Facebook only in narrow slices and never as a full replacement.
Deep
Two decades of social graph, interest and engagement data feed ad targeting and ranking. It is private and cannot be scraped.
To cross it: A challenger would need billions of logged-in users generating behavior data, and privacy rules like Apple's ATT make that harder to build now.
Deep
Meta made about $164B in revenue in 2024 and spends tens of billions a year on infrastructure and AI. It can buy or copy any rising rival.
To cross it: Hard to match. Win a niche where Meta is slow or restricted, and stay small enough that buying you is not worth it.
Facebook Ads connects millions of advertisers with billions of users. Marketplace and Groups also bring local buyers and sellers together.
To cross it: Build one vertical or local marketplace with real liquidity, as Nextdoor and OfferUp have attempted, and win it city by city.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- The news feed, profiles, posts, comments, likes and messaging UI.
- Basic Groups and Events features.
- A simple ad dashboard.
- Marketplace listing flows.
How you'd go after it
- Win one niche community (a hobby, neighborhood or profession) with a focused space that is not full of ads and noise.
- Offer privacy-first or chronological alternatives to users who are tired of algorithmic feeds.
- Give small businesses cheaper ads or direct customer lists that skip Meta's auction.
- Use an open protocol such as Bluesky or ActivityPub so users can bring their followers along.
04/Build against it?
Stay away
Do not try to clone general-purpose Facebook. Only build a narrow community product where you already have an audience and the network starts inside a tight group.
