01/The verdict

A multi-asset retail trading and investing app with social features and CopyTrader. Retail investors pay through spreads, fees, FX conversion and interest.

eToro has been public on Nasdaq (ETOR) since May 2025. It reports 3.73M funded accounts and $20.8B in assets under administration (Q3 2025). It holds broker licences in the EU (CySEC 109/10 plus a MiCA crypto licence), the UK, Australia and the US. CopyTrader runs on a two-sided network of 2,500+ Popular Investors, some with tens of thousands of copiers and hundreds of millions in copied money, so a clone opens to an empty room. Robinhood, Trading 212, NAGA and Revolut can match the app itself. What protects eToro is its licences, the money customers have parked with it, and its social graph, which together take years to build.

02/4 moats

~36 mo to cross

eToro is licensed by CySEC (109/10, plus MiCA since January 2025), the FCA, ASIC and FINRA/SEC in the US, with more licences in other regions. It holds client assets and custodies crypto under these rules.

To cross it: Raise tens of millions in regulatory capital and get broker licences in each major region, which takes years and comes with ongoing supervision. A faster route is building on top of a broker-as-a-service like Alpaca or DriveWealth, but that only covers some markets.

Time won't do it

More than 2,500 Popular Investors are paid to publish strategies with years of verified track records. Top traders like Jeppe Kirk Bonde have 25,000+ copiers and over $250M copied.

To cross it: Recruit proven traders, pay them, and get them to bring their copiers over, without their eToro track records, which don't transfer to a new platform.

Time won't do it

It is a profitable public company that raised about $310M at IPO and announced a $150M buyback. It spent about $53M on sales and marketing in Q2 2025 alone and sponsors major sports teams.

To cross it: Raise venture money on the scale of Robinhood or Revolut to buy users at fintech customer acquisition costs.

~48 mo to cross

Customers trust it with their savings and crypto. It has 18 years of operating history, about 40M registered users, and the disclosure and audits that come with being listed in the US.

To cross it: Run a regulated platform for years without a custody or outage incident and build up a record of reviews and press.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The trading app UI, charts, watchlists and social feed
  • Copy-trading mechanics (mirroring a portfolio proportionally)
  • Smart Portfolios and thematic baskets
  • AI tools and a market-insights layer

How you'd go after it

  • A US-first copy-investing app built on Alpaca or DriveWealth, where eToro's US product is still limited (like dub's approach)
  • Undercut eToro's spreads, FX conversion and withdrawal fees, as Trading 212 and Revolut do, with zero-commission pricing
  • Pay top creators a bigger revenue share to bring their audiences from X and YouTube to a new platform
  • Focus on one market eToro serves poorly, such as India or LatAm, with local payment rails and local stocks

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Licences, capital requirements and an established copy-trader network make a head-on clone a multi-year, high-cost bet. Only try it with a regulated broker partner and a creator audience you already have.
