Donna
Does Donna have a moat?
Kinda.
33/100 · Shallow moat
“The practice software is a month's build. A clean, current library of Mauritian law and a small bar that knows the founders is the only barrier.”

01/The verdict
Practice management plus a cited Mauritian legal research and drafting AI, paid by Mauritian lawyers at Rs 5,000 to 8,000 per lawyer per month.
Clients, diary, billing and a chat-with-law assistant are easy to rebuild with AI tools. The real barrier is a maintained, consolidated library of Mauritian legislation, case law and Code Civil with amendment tracking, plus a human check that each user is a lawyer. That takes months of effort, but the market is tiny, so few challengers will try, and the case data is mostly public or on subscription from the courts. I found no funding, no big founder audience and no certifications.
02/3 moats
Real
Donna says it runs on a maintained library of every Act, Code, regulation, Privy Council appeal and Mauritian court judgement. It tracks repeals and how later cases treated each one, and checks quotes word for word. The Supreme Court publishes some judgements free and sells others by subscription.
To cross it: A challenger would have to scrape, clean and consolidate the legislation and judgements, then build amendment history and citation checks, which takes months of data work.
Shallow
Each matter holds documents, parties, tasks, time and invoices, with a cause list and diary tied to hearings. A firm that moves its files and billing history into Donna would have to export and rebuild all of it.
To cross it: Offer a free migration and import tool, and a lower price for the first year.
Shallow
Donna runs a Free tier for verified lawyers, pupils and students, which builds habit early. It also offers a connector so Claude or ChatGPT can query Mauritian law. Testimonials come from named local barristers. Bar-wide word of mouth in a small profession helps.
To cross it: Win a few respected chambers and a law school pilot, then reach the rest of the bar through them.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- Matters, clients, diary, time and billing screens are standard and rebuilt in weeks.
- Chat with citations and Word drafting use off-the-shelf models, so the AI layer is easy to match.
- Pricing in rupees and the English and French split are simple to copy.
- The Claude and ChatGPT connector is a thin API layer.
How you'd go after it
- Sell a cheaper or free research-only tool built on the public judgements and Acts, with no practice management.
- Bundle the same features into a general firm tool and target the biggest Port Louis firms with a custom onboarding.
- Partner with a legal publisher or the Bar for exclusive access to reports and annotated texts.
- Let lawyers use Claude or ChatGPT with their own uploaded legal files at near zero cost.
04/Build against it?
Only with an edge
Only worth it with a local edge, such as exclusive access to law reports or a pull with the Bar. The market is a few hundred to roughly a thousand lawyers, so it is small, and a clone has no network effects to beat.
