01/The verdict

An iOS app (React Native/Expo) that compresses JPG, PNG and HEIC photos to free up phone storage. Consumers pay $2.99 a week, $14.99 a year or $24.99 for lifetime access.

Nothing protects this app. It wraps standard image compression in a paywall, and there are dozens of App Store rivals. The best known, New Marketing Lab's 'Compress Photos & Pictures' (id1449007043), has nearly the same name and was live years earlier. Revenue is $18 MRR from 5 subscribers, the App Store shows 1 rating, the founder has 339 X followers, and the app has been listed for sale at $3,000, so a newcomer has nothing to catch up to.

02/Moats

No moats found. Nothing here would take a good clone longer than a weekend.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The compression itself comes from native iOS image APIs or common libraries and takes a day or two to rebuild
  • Customers can do it free with an iOS Shortcut, by mailing photos at a smaller size, or by changing the camera format setting
  • The App Store keywords ('compress photos', 'image compressor', 'reduce image size') are open to anyone, and many apps already target them
  • It has 1 rating and almost no reviews, so a new listing starts on equal footing

How you'd go after it

  • Out-rank it on ASO by bundling video compression and HEIC-to-JPG conversion. Users search for those together
  • Charge a one-time price under $10, or go free with ads, to undercut a $2.99 weekly subscription that buyers see as predatory
  • Turn it into a storage cleaner (duplicates, large videos plus compression), where people pay more, and take its users along
  • Add a share-sheet extension that compresses for WhatsApp or email in one tap, then market it through TikTok how-to videos

04/Build against it?

Stay away

This market is a commodity. Apple's own tools do the job for free, dozens of apps already compete on ASO, and this app makes about $30 a month. Only a builder with an ASO portfolio or paid-acquisition engine of their own should enter, and as a feature inside a broader storage-cleaner app, not as a standalone product.
