01/The verdict
A consumer app and website for finding, mapping and navigating hiking, biking and running trails. Hikers pay $36 to $80 a year for Plus or Peak (offline maps, route planning, AI features).
The software is easy to rebuild. Basemaps come from OpenStreetMap and public data, and GPS tracking and offline maps are solved problems. What protects AllTrails is a user-generated content loop, a lot like Yelp's, at a scale nobody else in trails has: 100 million members, 500,000+ trails, and recent reviews and photos that tell hikers whether a trail is muddy or closed this week. That content earns it top organic search results, which bring in 59% of desktop visits, and it is backed by $227M from Spectrum Equity and Permira. A clone starts with empty trail pages. Even well-funded rivals like Strava and Komoot compete on navigation rather than discovery.
02/4 moats
Deep
In August 2026 AllTrails passed 100 million members, with 2.5 billion miles logged and 293 million trails saved. Each new review, photo and recorded track makes a trail page more useful to the next hiker who wants current conditions.
To cross it: Build a comparable volume of fresh, trail-level reviews and recordings. That takes years of users, and those users currently have every reason to post on AllTrails.
Deep
Organic search is the top source of traffic to alltrails.com, about 59% of desktop visits. AllTrails pages rank at or near the top for '[trail name] hike' searches across hundreds of thousands of trails. It is also a long-running top Health & Fitness app with a 4.9 rating from about 965K reviews on iOS.
To cross it: Out-rank hundreds of thousands of trail pages that already have years of reviews and backlinks. Realistically this needs a platform with existing reach, like Google Maps or Strava, rather than a startup.
Real
AllTrails has hand-curated trail guides in 190+ countries and billions of miles of recorded GPS tracks. Its Public Lands Program shares usage insights with land agencies and works with partners like America's National Parks, which feeds back trail closures and official info.
To cross it: License or scrape public trail data and run a large curation team for years, while recruiting land agencies that already work with AllTrails.
Real
AllTrails has raised $227M in total, including a $150M round led by Permira in 2021, and Spectrum Equity is the majority owner. It runs 166+ active Meta ads and in 2025 hired Ring's former CEO Liz Hamren as CEO. Third-party estimates put app revenue at about $5M to $6M a month (unconfirmed).
To cross it: Raise nine figures to compete on paid acquisition and content, which only an incumbent like Strava ($2.2B valuation) or Bending Spoons-owned Komoot could do.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- GPS recording, offline maps, route planning and elevation profiles all run on OpenStreetMap and public data.
- The AI features in Peak (plant and insect ID, custom routes) are thin wrappers that any rival can ship.
- The navigation core is weaker than Gaia GPS or onX, and serious backcountry users already switch for better maps.
- Trustpilot reviews show anger at putting route planning behind the $80 Peak tier, which gives a cheaper rival an opening.
How you'd go after it
- Go after the users unhappy with Peak pricing: a one-time or cheap subscription with free route planning and offline maps.
- Pick a niche AllTrails covers poorly, like thru-hiking (FarOut), mountain biking (Trailforks), climbing or hunting (onX), where specialist data matters more than general reviews.
- Build on an existing social graph the way Strava is doing with route search and offline routes, so discovery comes from friends' activities instead of an empty review database.
- Win land agencies and park systems with better official-data partnerships, then make your app the authoritative source for closures and permits.
04/Build against it?
Stay away
Don't take on AllTrails head-on as a general trail discovery app: it would ship with empty trail pages and no search traffic. Only go in with a niche edge (thru-hiking, a region outside the US, or a specialist sport) or an existing user base like Strava's.
