Kinda.

“Anyone can fork the code from GitHub today. The slow part is wiring up Swedish banks, BankID, Skatteverket and Peppol, which takes months.”

01/The verdict

Swedish open-source (AGPL) bookkeeping software with a REST API, an MCP server and a CLI so AI agents can do the books. Small Swedish companies and accounting firms pay from 199 kr a month.

The whole engine is public under AGPL-3.0, and 121 forks already exist, so a challenger starts with working code rather than writing it. What protects Accounted is the plumbing behind the code: feeds from SEB, Swedbank, Handelsbanken and Nordea, BankID login, Skatteverket filing, Peppol e-invoicing and payroll. That work takes months, not years. Its funding is small (STING/Propel pre-seed plus Almi), its brand is new, it is up against Fortnox (500k+ customers), Bokio and Spiris, and other companies already offer MCP access to Fortnox.

02/4 moats

~6 mo to cross

Its connections list covers the four big Swedish banks plus Revolut, Wise and Lunar, along with Skatteverket, Peppol, Stripe, Shopify, Zettle, Gmail and WhatsApp intake, BankID signup and API importers from Fortnox, Bokio and Visma. Each needs its own agreements or access, for example a BankID broker, an open-banking provider and a Peppol access point.

To cross it: Sign up with an open-banking aggregator, a BankID broker and a Peppol access point, connect to Skatteverket's APIs for VAT and employer declarations, and reuse SIE4 import, which is an open standard.

~6 mo to cross

The engine enforces Bokföringslagen rules in the database itself: vouchers can't be changed after posting, voucher numbers run in sequence, periods lock, and documents are kept 7 years. Arcim Technology AB says it is registered with Finansinspektionen as a financial institute (no. 84663). ISO 27001 and SOC 2 are still in progress, not finished.

To cross it: Copy the BFL logic straight from the AGPL repo, file the fairly light FI registration, and match its security certifications, which it doesn't hold yet either.

~3 mo to cross

Bookkeeping history, payroll setup and agent rules create some friction. But Accounted itself promotes SIE4 export at any time and a five-minute import from Fortnox, Bokio and Visma, which shows how easily customers move.

To cross it: Build a SIE4 importer and an Accounted-to-you migration tool. The open API makes pulling the data out simple.

Time won't do it

The GitHub repo (erp-mafia/accounted) has about 426 stars and 121 forks. It also runs a community registry of skills and MCP servers, a SEO blog in Swedish, and a one-click Claude connector. The site claims 2,000+ companies and firms, which is unverified.

To cross it: Ship a stronger agent-native product or a fork, and win developer attention on GitHub, Hacker News and Swedish founder communities.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The ledger, the 280+ API endpoints and the 130+ MCP tools are all open source under AGPL and can be forked directly.
  • AI categorisation of receipts and transactions runs on the same Claude, OpenAI or Gemini models anyone can use.
  • Pricing from 199 kr a month matches Spiris and Bokio, so it is not an advantage.
  • Self-hosting with Docker and Supabase is documented, so technical customers can avoid paying entirely.

How you'd go after it

  • Target accounting firms (byråer) with a white-label, agent-native ledger with better client onboarding and bulk tools, where Accounted is still early.
  • Pick a vertical (e-commerce on Shopify/Stripe, consultants, or holding companies) and offer fully automated month-end closing at a flat price.
  • Build the agent layer on top of Fortnox's 500k+ customers, as More AI, Junipeer and Weavio already do, so customers keep their ledger and still get agents.
  • Expand across the Nordics (Norway's SAF-T, Denmark, Finland), where the Swedish-only codebase doesn't reach.

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

The Swedish bookkeeping market is dominated by Fortnox, Bokio and Spiris. The agent-native angle is easy to copy, since Accounted's own code is open and Fortnox MCP servers already exist. Only go in with a channel into accounting firms, a vertical you own, or a multi-country Nordic ledger.
