01/The verdict

A browser, Mac and CLI screen recorder that adds automatic zoom on clicks and typing, a smoothed cursor and local MP4 export. Creators and SaaS teams making demos pay $12.49 a month or $29 for lifetime access.

Auto-zoom, cursor smoothing, backgrounds and local export are now standard features. Free open-source projects like Recordly, OpenScreen, Glidecast and ScreenForge already reproduce them, and Cap.so offers them for free. ZoomCap's Mac app is at version 0.1.0. I found no Product Hunt launch, no visible founder audience and no funding, and its only real asset is a set of SEO comparison posts against Screen Studio. Recordings stay local and are never uploaded, so customers have no stored data to lose and can switch at any time.

02/1 moat

~3 mo to cross

The site runs an SEO content engine: a '20 tools compared' auto-zoom roundup, 'vs Screen Studio' and 'Screen Studio for Windows/Linux' posts, and free MP4-to-GIF and compressor tools. Its own roundup already ranks for 'screen recorder automatic zoom', next to Cap and other rivals' listicles.

To cross it: Publish the same comparison and alternatives pages plus a few free tools, then wait a few months for them to rank. Rivals like ScreenSnap, Tella, Vos and SmoothCapture already do exactly this.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Auto-zoom on clicks and typing with spring easing. Open-source repos like Recordly, OpenScreen and ScreenForge already do this.
  • A cursor redrawn at 60fps, click ripples, backgrounds, a Mac window frame and a webcam bubble. Screen Studio, Cap and FocuSee all offer the same set.
  • In-browser encoding and on-device captions using standard WebCodecs and Whisper-style speech models.
  • $29 lifetime pricing. Free open-source tools undercut it, and any clone can match it.

How you'd go after it

  • Release it free and open source under the MIT licence for Windows and Linux, and pull in the 'Screen Studio for Windows' searchers that ZoomCap is targeting.
  • Pick a niche the general tools ignore, such as developer docs that turn into Mintlify or Docusaurus embeds, or recording iPhone screens for app-store previews, and own that use case.
  • Build team features like shared brand presets, hosted share links and analytics. ZoomCap's no-upload design rules these out.
  • Sell to SaaS companies that need demo videos at scale, by bundling auto-zoom recording with AI voiceover and localisation.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

There are 20+ auto-zoom recorders, including free open-source ones, with Screen Studio and Cap at the top. Only go in if you already have a developer or creator audience, or a vertical niche the general tools ignore.
