01/The verdict

Trace: a free AI news digest that groups and summarizes 100+ tech and AI sources into about 10 stories each morning. You can read it by email, web feed, Chrome new tab, Android app or MCP server. Nobody pays yet.

Trace is a solo indie project. Its Chrome extension has 32 users, the Android app has 500+ downloads, and the founder has about 110 GitHub followers. Under the hood it gathers RSS feeds, groups related articles, ranks them with an LLM and summarizes them. The code is public on GitHub, so a clone can simply fork it. Nothing about it is hard to match: no audience, no data, no lock-in. It also competes in one of the most crowded newsletter categories there is.

02/1 moat

~2 mo to cross

Tarun Tomar writes SEO comparison posts such as 'Feedly alternatives', 'Inoreader alternatives' and 'Best AI news apps 2026', and runs a public daily archive at /brief. These pages are likely still early in search rankings and bring little traffic.

To cross it: Publish the same set of comparison posts and daily archive pages, and give it a few months to get indexed.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The grouping, ranking and summarizing pipeline is published as open source on GitHub
  • Most of the 100+ sources are public RSS feeds, Hacker News, Reddit, Product Hunt and GitHub, and anyone can pull them
  • Multi-channel delivery (email, Chrome new tab, Android app, MCP server) is each a few days of work
  • Being free has no switching cost: subscribers can leave with one click

How you'd go after it

  • Go after a narrow vertical the general AI digests skip, like robotics, fintech or AI for lawyers, and sell sponsorships
  • Grow on X or LinkedIn with a founder voice, the way The Rundown and Superhuman AI reached millions
  • Lead with the MCP or agent angle: an API for news on the day's events that developers pay for
  • Pay for cross-promotion through newsletter networks like Beehiiv Boosts or Sparkloop to get subscribers faster than SEO can

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Daily AI news digests are a commodity, and incumbents with 1 to 2 million subscribers win on distribution. Only enter with an existing audience or a niche vertical where readers will pay or sponsors pay well.
