“A Twitter clone is a weekend project. Only Meta, starting with Instagram's 2B users, has come close to X's live graph of 500M+ accounts.”

01/The verdict

Real-time public social network for news, sports and politics. Advertisers pay for reach, and users pay for Premium subscriptions (verification, more reach, Grok).

Anyone can build the feed app. What people come for is the live crowd: journalists, athletes, politicians and Musk himself posting first, which recent estimates put at about 550M to 600M monthly users and 130M to 250M daily. The one rival that caught up, Threads at 500M+ monthly users by mid-2026, started with Instagram's social graph, while Bluesky reached only about 41M users despite repeated waves of people leaving X. X is clearly leaking: ad revenue was about $1.8B in 2025, roughly 40% of Twitter's 2021 level. But that kind of decline takes years, and a founder with Claude Code can't cause it.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

X is the default place where breaking news, sports and politics get discussed live, with roughly 550M to 600M monthly users and about 15 years of follower graphs. Bluesky grew from 25.9M to 41.4M users in 2025 and still reaches only a fraction of that.

To cross it: Start with an existing social graph of hundreds of millions of people, as Threads did through Instagram, and then convince the accounts that break news to post on your platform first.

Time won't do it

Elon Musk is the most-followed account on the platform, with likely more than 200M followers. He uses X as the main channel for news about Tesla, SpaceX and xAI and for his politics, which keeps a large, engaged audience coming back.

To cross it: There is no realistic path. A challenger would need an equally newsworthy figure who posts there daily.

Time won't do it

In March 2025 xAI bought X in a deal that valued X at $33B. X now sits inside Musk's AI and space companies, which can absorb losses on the ad business and give it Grok and money for compute.

To cross it: Only a company with Meta-scale resources can keep funding a free social network at this size through years of losses.

~24 mo to cross

X serves real-time feeds, video, ranking and ads to hundreds of millions of users, with traffic spikes during live events. It also holds money transmitter licences in most US states for X Money.

To cross it: Spend years and a lot of money building feed, ads and moderation systems that hold up during a World Cup final or an election night.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The core features (posts, replies, reposts, long posts, edits) were cloned by Threads in about 5 months and by Bluesky and Mastodon
  • Premium perks such as verification badges, edit button and reduced ads are trivial to copy
  • Community Notes and the 'For You' ranking style have been widely imitated
  • Expensive API pricing pushed developers and third-party clients toward open rivals

How you'd go after it

  • Offer advertisers who left X brand-safe inventory with clear measurement
  • Win a single vertical where X has lost trust, such as academics, science, journalists or local news, the way Bluesky did
  • Use an open protocol (AT Protocol, ActivityPub) so creators can move their followers, which lowers the cost of leaving X
  • Bootstrap from a social graph you already have, such as Instagram for Threads, a Substack audience or a Discord community, instead of starting from zero

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Building the product is easy, but the network is where the value lives. Even with X losing users and advertisers, the only rival to reach scale had Meta's graph behind it. A new general-purpose X clone starts with an empty room.
