01/The verdict

xAI (now SpaceXAI): the Grok chatbot, the Grok API and X/Tesla integrations, paid for by consumers through SuperGrok and X Premium, plus developers, enterprises and governments.

"Attention Required!" is the name of Cloudflare's block page, not the startup. The site is x.ai, which is xAI, maker of Grok, now part of SpaceX. Nobody can clone a frontier model lab plus Colossus (about 2 GW, 555k GPUs planned) plus X's 600M users without tens of billions of dollars and years. The score isn't higher because Grok holds only about 2 to 3% of chatbot web traffic, users can switch to ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude in seconds, and nearly all of its 12 co-founders have left.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

Colossus in Memphis went to 100k H100s in 122 days and is expanding toward about 2 GW and 555k GPUs, with a stated goal of 1M. It has so much spare capacity that Anthropic reportedly rents all of Colossus 1 (about 300 MW) for around $1.25B a month.

To cross it: Get gigawatts of power, hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs and the capital to pay for them, which only a few hyperscalers and labs have.

Time won't do it

It raised $6B, then $10B at a $200B valuation, then $20B. In February 2026 SpaceX bought it at a combined $1.25T valuation, SpaceX IPO'd in June 2026, and then it bought Cursor for $60B in stock. That pays for quarterly losses of over $1.4B against about $107M in revenue.

To cross it: Raise tens of billions a year and accept losing billions per quarter for years.

Time won't do it

Grok is built into X (about 600M MAU), Tesla cars, Starlink support and, since August 2026, Cursor (50k+ businesses, about $3B ARR). Reuters reported its US mobile chatbot share rose from 1.6% to 17.8% in one year, driven by X.

To cross it: Own or partner with a social network, a car fleet and a top coding tool, none of which can be bought by asking.

Time won't do it

Elon Musk is the most-followed account on X (likely 200M+ followers) and personally promotes every Grok release. That also helps explain the $0.42 GSA deal and the Defense Department contract.

To cross it: There is no way to copy it. A challenger would need a founder with comparable reach, which no one has.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The chat interface, SuperGrok tiers and image/voice features are easy to copy and already sold by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
  • API pricing ($0.20 to $2 per million input tokens) is matched or undercut by DeepSeek and other open-weight hosts.
  • Users have almost no switching costs: chats carry little lock-in and the API is OpenAI-compatible.
  • Model leadership is temporary: each Grok release is matched by a rival within months.

How you'd go after it

  • Win enterprise and regulated buyers on safety and brand trust, where Grok's controversies and executive churn hurt it.
  • Undercut on price with open-weight models (DeepSeek, Qwen, Llama) hosted cheaply for developers who don't need frontier quality.
  • Go vertical (legal, medical, finance) with proprietary data and compliance that a general model like Grok doesn't focus on.
  • Hire away researchers: 80+ researchers and nearly all co-founders have left, so talent is available.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Competing head-on with a frontier lab takes billions in compute. Only build nearby, as an application or vertical layer using these models.
