01/The verdict

Vitals is a $15 one-time Mac utility that replaces Activity Monitor. It groups processes by app and adds history, alerts, coding-agent tracking and an MCP server. Mac users, mostly developers, pay for it.

Vitals is a well-made, local-only Mac utility. It uses public macOS APIs and needs no App Store approval, compliance or network. It launched about a month ago (#4 of the day on Product Hunt, 300 points, 403 followers) and claims 1,540+ users. What protection it has comes from solo maker Atta (@attacomsian): an SEO comparison-page machine, his own launch site StartupBase, and a promo that refunds half or all of the price for posts that get views. All of that is new and easy to copy, in a category full of free and long-established rivals.

02/2 moats

~3 mo to cross

The site runs a content engine for search: 'best Activity Monitor / iStat Menus / Stats alternatives' rankings, an htop guide, a glossary and vs-pages. It also pays users back 50% at 2,000 views and 100% at 20,000 views for posts on X, TikTok, Reels or Shorts. The maker also runs StartupBase, a Product Hunt alternative live since 2017 with about 10k listings, which he can use to promote his own apps.

To cross it: Publish a similar set of comparison and how-to pages and run your own creator cash-back offer. The pages are only months old, so they are not entrenched in search yet.

Time won't do it

Atta is a serial indie maker (Depost AI, StartupBase, Flit, Levers) who builds in public on X as an 'AI Founder & Educator'. He cross-promotes his apps on each product site. His follower count is unconfirmed and likely modest, not hundreds of thousands.

To cross it: Launch with your own developer audience, or partner with Mac and dev YouTubers who already review system monitors.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Grouping helper processes under their parent app and showing per-app CPU, memory and GPU figures
  • Storing a local history of up to a year, plus alerts when an app misbehaves
  • Menu bar readouts, temperature and fan sensors, battery drain and a per-app volume mixer
  • Coding-agent session tracking, dev server and port lists, Docker container stats, an MCP server and a CLI. These are thin layers on the same data

How you'd go after it

  • Ship it free and open source, the way Stats does on GitHub, and undercut a $15 app on price and trust in one move
  • Win developers with a deeper agent focus: per-agent token and cost tracking, killing runaway sessions, and project-level views tied into Cursor or Claude Code
  • Bundle monitoring with cleanup and storage maps, which are on Vitals' roadmap but not shipped. That is how Sensei and CleanMyMac sell
  • Get into Setapp or the Mac App Store for distribution that Vitals, sold directly and through a Homebrew tap, doesn't have

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Most of the market is happy with Activity Monitor or the free Stats app, and one-time prices around $15 to $60 cap revenue. Only go in with a developer audience of your own or a sharp AI-agent angle, and expect a small business.
