01/The verdict
Triggered onboarding emails for consumer web apps. It reads PostHog or Segment events, emails stalled signups from the customer's own domain, and holds back 10% to measure lift. Indie app makers pay $24.50 to $324.50 a month.
Everything PennyPost does runs on public, self-serve APIs: PostHog, Segment, Clerk and Supabase for events, and the customer's own Resend, SendGrid or Brevo account for sending. That means no approvals, no sending infrastructure and no data a rival lacks. I found no funding, no reviews, no launch threads and no named customers beyond CueScout, which looks like the founder's own app. Its likely buyers already use PostHog Workflows, Loops or Customer.io, which can send the same emails.
02/1 moat
Shallow
Over time a customer builds up tuned emails for each stall point and weeks of holdout history. That is light lock-in, because setup takes one click or one script, and the customer keeps their ESP and their own onboarding emails.
To cross it: Offer a one-click import of the stall-point emails and connect to the same PostHog project, so nothing is lost by switching.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- The five stall-point templates (left before result was ready, never opened main page, never started, stopped halfway, didn't return by day 3) are plain event rules any lifecycle tool can express.
- A 10% holdout group and a weekly 'who came back' report are a few hundred lines of code.
- The integrations (PostHog, Segment, Clerk, Supabase, Resend, SendGrid, Brevo, Loops, Slack, an MCP server) are all public APIs with no approval gates.
- AI-rewritten emails are a single LLM call per template.
How you'd go after it
- Ship it as a free feature inside an existing tool: PostHog Workflows, Loops or Dreamlit can add stall templates and a holdout toggle and reach their user base right away.
- Undercut on price with a flat $19 to $29 plan for indie makers, or open-source it to run on the customer's own Supabase.
- Go after a vertical PennyPost doesn't serve, such as B2B SaaS seat activation or mobile apps with push plus email, where its consumer-web focus doesn't fit.
- Win on proof: publish real holdout lift numbers from dozens of apps, because PennyPost has no public results yet.
04/Build against it?
Stay away
This is a feature inside a crowded lifecycle-email market, and PostHog, the main data source, already sends triggered emails itself. Only build it if you already have an audience of indie makers who would buy from you.
