Does Autumn have a moat?

Kinda.

36/100 · Shallow moat

“The core code is Apache 2.0, so anyone can fork it. Once a startup's billing state lives in Autumn, moving it out is risky surgery nobody wants.”

01/The verdict

An open-source billing layer on top of Stripe that handles credits, usage limits, entitlements and plan changes. AI startups pay for it once their monthly billing volume passes $8K, with paid plans from $375/month.

Autumn's code gives it no protection: it is open source, it sits on Stripe, and at least five funded rivals sell the same idea. What it does have is billing lock-in, a strong early customer list (Mintlify, Firecrawl, Mastra, Browser Use, T3.chat) and about $7.7M from YC and Paul Graham. All three help, and a well-funded challenger gets past them in months. On top of that, Stripe bought Metronome for a reported $1B, which puts the platform Autumn depends on into direct competition with it.

02/4 moats

~6 mo to cross

Autumn acts as the app's billing database. Customer plans, credit balances, usage counters and feature access live in Autumn and are checked through its API, so leaving it means migrating live subscriptions and rewriting checks across the app.

To cross it: Go after startups before they pick a billing tool, or ship a one-click importer from Autumn, since it is open source and its data model is public.

The GitHub repo had about 2,600 stars and 224 forks in mid-2026 reporting. It also has a Show HN, a blog post that reached the HN front page, and visible AI-startup customers whose founders are known on dev Twitter.

To cross it: Build developer content and a YC-style founder network that gets the product in front of seed-stage AI teams before they write their own billing.

Funding

Shallow

~6 mo to cross

Autumn raised about $7.7M: a $500K pre-seed in August 2025 and a roughly $7M seed in December 2025 with Paul Graham and Y Combinator. The team is small, around 5 to 8 people in London.

To cross it: Raise a comparable seed, which is doable in the current AI-infra market, though Stripe, Orb and Lago already have more money.

~9 mo to cross

Billing bugs cost money and customers. Production use at Mintlify, Firecrawl and T3.chat works as social proof for other AI startups choosing who can touch their revenue.

To cross it: Get 3 to 5 known AI startups running in production without incidents and publish case studies.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The logic for credits, top-ups, overages and per-seat billing is public under Apache 2.0, so anyone can fork it or rebuild it.
  • Stripe does all the actual payment processing, so Autumn has no payments infrastructure of its own to protect.
  • The React hooks and pricing-table widgets are UI any clone can match in days.
  • Self-hosting for free undercuts the managed $375/month plan.

How you'd go after it

  • Become a Merchant of Record that also handles sales tax, the way Polar and Dodo Payments do, which Autumn can't offer while it sits on Stripe.
  • Charge a flat price instead of pricing by billing volume, aimed at AI startups past $50K MRR who resent paying more as they grow.
  • Bill per event in real time for token-heavy products, competing with Flexprice and Credyt, and pitch customers who outgrow Autumn's Stripe-bound model.
  • Lean on Stripe's own billing tools, now strengthened by Metronome, plus a thin open-source entitlements SDK, and pitch 'one fewer vendor holding your billing data'.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Stripe now owns Metronome, Lago and Orb are better funded, and Autumn's own code is free to fork. A newcomer only has a chance with a real wedge, such as Merchant of Record plus tax, or a non-Stripe payments rail.
