Does TubeBuddy have a moat?

Kinda.

46/100 · Shallow moat

“The extension is a month of work. A decade of SEO, creator affiliates, 1M+ Chrome users and YouTube Certified status is the part that takes years.”

01/The verdict

A browser extension and web app that adds keyword research, tag, SEO, A/B testing and bulk tools to YouTube Studio. Creators and agencies pay about $4 to $29 a month per channel.

The tools are easy to rebuild. Keyword scores, tag suggestions and bulk edits are all built on the public YouTube API. TubeBuddy has real distribution, though. It has about 1M Chrome users on the main listing, an affiliate and educator network, and YouTube Certified status since 2015. YouTube also now ships some of the same features for free, and vidIQ is a close rival with an AI-first pitch. That keeps the score in the shallow range.

02/4 moats

~18 mo to cross

The Chrome listing shows 1M+ users and 8.5K ratings, and third-party sites cite 15M+ installs since 2014. It has a partner program with YouTube educators such as Sunny Lenarduzzi, and it ranks high in comparison and review SEO.

To cross it: Build creator affiliate channels, win comparison and review SEO, and get YouTube educators to recommend you.

~6 mo to cross

TubeBuddy says it has been a YouTube Certified Company since 2015 and is listed in YouTube's Service Provider Directory. It also has high API quota access.

To cross it: Apply for YouTube API compliance audits and quota extensions, and wait out the review time.

Funding

Shallow

Time won't do it

Since 2020 it has been a division of BEN Group (BENlabs), which bought it and put a Tubular Labs founder in charge. That gives it a parent with backing, though vidIQ has raised only about $7M and still competes.

To cross it: Raise a seed round and spend it on creator marketing.

~24 mo to cross

Creators have used it for over 10 years, and it was one of the first tools that did not ask for a password. Trustpilot is weak, with about 25 reviews and complaints about billing and cancelling.

To cross it: Ship reliably for a few years and collect reviews from known channels.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Keyword scores, tag suggestions and SEO checklists, which any dev can rebuild on the YouTube Data API in weeks
  • The Chrome extension overlay and bulk editing tools
  • Thumbnail and title A/B testing, which YouTube now offers natively in Studio
  • Pricing, since Pro at about $12 a month is easy to undercut

How you'd go after it

  • Bundle keyword research, thumbnail and title A/B testing and AI scripting into one cheaper tool, as OutlierKit and 1of10 do
  • Target one niche, such as Shorts creators, faceless channels or agencies, with better data than the general tools
  • Win on trust: easy cancellation and good support, which Trustpilot reviewers say TubeBuddy lacks
  • Sell inside AI assistants through an MCP server or agent for YouTube SEO

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only go in with a sharp wedge, such as a niche audience, a founder with a following, or proprietary video data. A generic YouTube SEO extension would face TubeBuddy, vidIQ and YouTube's free tools.
