Does Sextant have a moat?

No.

“The Mac app is a month of work. ASO rivals already sell keyword research, and nothing here stops an indie dev from switching.”

01/The verdict

Native Mac app that maps App Store searches around an indie iOS app, scores each by fit, popularity and difficulty, and tracks daily rank. Indie iOS developers pay $99/year ($69.30 founder price).

Sextant reads Apple's public search results and autocomplete, runs on the user's Mac, and has no network effect, stored history or lock-in. Its one edge is the Jev model that scores fit, which the site credits to the same team (TypeSafe), but a rival can approximate it with an LLM or heuristics. It is a new product (v1.0.0, Product Hunt launch) with no visible audience or funding, against established ASO tools (AppFollow, AppTweak, Astro, Appfigures).

02/2 moats

Hard tech

Shallow

~3 mo to cross

Ranking quality rests on Jev, TypeSafe's probability-based model that scores whether searchers want an app like yours. It sets Sextant's fit score apart from plain search volume. The site claims it can't invent keywords, but I found no independent benchmark.

To cross it: Build a classifier on Apple search results and autocomplete, or prompt an LLM with the same signals, and tune it against real ranks.

~2 mo to cross

Daily rank tracking builds a history for each app and keyword, and the Plan tab keeps keyword choices. All of it lives locally on one Mac per subscription, so it is light lock-in at best.

To cross it: Offer a CSV import and a cheaper or free tier, so people can start tracking without losing much.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The scraping of Apple search results, autocomplete and rank checks across 175 storefronts is public data that any rival can pull.
  • The fit, popularity and difficulty scores and the competitor tables can be reproduced with an LLM and some tuning.
  • A native Mac UI and App Store Connect connection are ordinary work for any Swift developer.
  • Pricing at $99/year is low and has no sales motion, so a rival can undercut it or give it away.

How you'd go after it

  • Offer a free or one-time-price tool for indie devs that covers the same keyword mapping, and sell it through indie dev communities and X.
  • Bundle keyword research with metadata testing, screenshots and review replies, which an established ASO suite like AppFollow or AppTweak already sells.
  • Ship a web or cross-platform version for devs who don't use a Mac, or for teams that share data.
  • Target one niche, such as a single app category or non-English storefronts, with deeper local data.

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

The ASO tools market is crowded and the product is easy to copy. Build here only with an audience of indie iOS devs, or a better fit-scoring model than the rivals have.
