01/The verdict

A $4 one-time Mac menu bar app that blurs every window except the active one, with a cursor-shake toggle. Sold to individual Mac users through Gumroad.

Monocle is a small utility priced at $4 to $9 once. It overlays blur on inactive windows using native macOS materials, which a competent builder with Claude Code can copy in days. The only edges are the designer's taste, a #2 Product Hunt launch and a small X following of about 2.8k. None of these keeps customers from switching or building it themselves.

02/1 moat

Time won't do it

Founder Dominik Kandravy (@heyiamdk) has about 2,800 X followers and about 266 LinkedIn followers. The app got a top-10 Product Hunt week in December 2025. That is a small audience.

To cross it: Ship a more polished or cheaper version and launch on Product Hunt and X. A small audience like this is easy to match.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Window blur and dimming rely on standard macOS APIs and native blur materials.
  • Cursor-shake activation and gradient or fullscreen blur styles are small features that can be copied in days.
  • A $4 one-time price leaves no revenue for lock-in, and customers have no data or history to migrate.
  • The design polish is the main selling point, and it is easy to imitate.

How you'd go after it

  • Offer a free or open-source version on GitHub and Homebrew, so there is nothing to pay for.
  • Add the features users have asked for: adjustable blur strength, app exclusions, Dock exclusion. Monocle reportedly lacks some of these, and FocusDim already has them.
  • Bundle window focus into a larger Mac productivity suite or window manager, such as Raycast or Rectangle-style tools.
  • Target the Tahoe window-confusion problem with a dim, border and blur combo.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

It is a low-priced, commodity utility with established rivals like HazeOver and a growing set of cheap clones. There is little revenue to win and nothing to lock customers in.
