Does Personal Training Software for Fitness P have a moat?

Kinda.

52/100 · Shallow moat

“The workout builder is a month of coding. Getting 500K coaches, a Thoma Bravo-backed gym channel and clients stuck in your app takes years.”

01/The verdict

Software that personal trainers and gyms use to build workout programs, track clients, run nutrition and habit coaching, and take payments through a client mobile app. Trainers pay monthly per client tier.

The core product (programs, logging, chat, check-ins, Stripe billing) is a few months of work with AI tools, and rivals like Everfit, TrueCoach and PT Distinction already sell it cheaper. The real protection is the installed base of about 500K coaches, the ABC Fitness gym channel under Thoma Bravo, and client history that trainers would lose by switching. Reviews show bugs and a clunky client app, so it is shallow-to-real rather than deep.

02/4 moats

~24 mo to cross

Athletech News reports nearly half a million coaches use the platform. It is sold as an add-on inside ABC Fitness, which serves about 30K clubs and 40M members. It also ranks high in 'Trainerize alternatives' content.

To cross it: Build a comparable referral channel with gym management software or a large coach community, and outrank it on trainer search terms.

~12 mo to cross

Trainers keep client programs, workout history, nutrition logs, payments and chat in the app, and clients have it on their phones. Leaving means rebuilding programs and asking every client to move.

To cross it: Offer free import tools and a migration service, and win trainers when they start a new client roster.

Time won't do it

It is a subsidiary of ABC Fitness Solutions, which Thoma Bravo bought in 2019 for an estimated $450M. ABC reports about $12B in yearly payments, so it can fund development and sales for years.

To cross it: Don't fight on spend. Compete in a niche where a PE-backed generalist moves slowly.

~6 mo to cross

It syncs Apple Health, Google Health, Garmin, Fitbit, Withings and MyFitnessPal, and handles Stripe payments in 45+ countries. It also publishes white-label apps to the App Store and Google Play.

To cross it: Use the same public wearable APIs and Stripe, then handle app store publishing for white-label customers.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Workout and program builder with an exercise video library
  • Client chat, check-ins, habit tracking and progress photos
  • Nutrition logging through MyFitnessPal-style integrations
  • Stripe subscriptions and payments

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut on price: Everfit has a free tier and Trainerize's per-client tiers get costly as a trainer grows
  • Win trainers who complain about bugs and a clunky client app with a simpler, faster app
  • Target one niche, such as strength coaches, online nutrition coaches or Europe, with deep features
  • Add AI program building and automated check-ins that a large legacy product ships slowly

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

The market has many cheap rivals, so only enter with a niche and a way to reach trainers, such as a coach audience or a gym partnership.
