Does SpotterMed have a moat?

No.

“A 1,500-question bank is a few weeks of writing. Nobody has to switch to SpotterMed, and Quesmed and Pastest already own the students.”

01/The verdict

A UK-focused online question bank of 1,500+ spotter and data-interpretation questions for medical students, paid for by students on subscription.

The product is a question bank. A clone needs a quiz app plus a few hundred to a few thousand questions, and AI can draft much of that content now. I found no founder following (the TikTok has about 175 followers), no funding, no approvals or compliance, and no sign of lock-in. Established rivals have far more content, apps and brand with students.

02/1 moat

~3 mo to cross

Small social presence: a TikTok with about 175 followers and 18.6K likes, and an X account posting med-student memes. Likely some word of mouth in London and UK med schools, but nothing I could verify.

To cross it: Post revision content on TikTok, Instagram and student societies, and offer free trials to medical school cohorts.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The question bank content: 1,500 questions can be rewritten or AI-drafted and checked by a few clinicians in weeks.
  • The web app, quiz UI and progress tracking, which are standard.
  • Spotter format and topic list (anatomy, histology, physiology), which are generic exam topics anyone can cover.
  • Pricing and the subscription model.

How you'd go after it

  • Bundle spotter questions into an existing bank, as Quesmed already does with 3,000+ pre-clinical questions and anatomy image spotters.
  • Undercut on price or go free, supported by ads or a university licence.
  • Target a single medical school's exact exam format with matching images and mock exams, and sell through its student society.
  • Use AI to produce larger question sets with adaptive spaced repetition and image-based anatomy.

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only worth building with an edge, such as a specific med school's exam format, licensed anatomy imagery or an existing student audience. A generic question bank loses to Quesmed and Pastest.
