01/The verdict

An ASO tool with keyword popularity and difficulty scores, daily rank tracking, competitor gaps and an MCP/CLI for AI agents, for both app stores. Indie app developers pay from $25 a month.

Sonar's core data is Apple's search popularity score, which any free Apple Search Ads account can pull through the API, plus scraped store rankings. It is a 7-month-old solo product with 193 subscriptions at about $22 each, a founder with 282 X followers, and a growing set of SEO comparison pages (DR 36). Its only real protection is a few months of tracked rank history per customer and an early content engine. Several rivals already sell the same thing for as little as $9 a month or free.

02/2 moats

~4 mo to cross

Sonar publishes many SEO pages that target rival names, such as Astro ASO alternatives, App Radar alternatives and Appfigures comparisons, along with explainer guides on the Apple Search Ads API. The domain rating is 36 and the site gets about 1,600 visitors a month.

To cross it: Publish the same set of alternatives and comparison pages and build backlinks for a few months. Applyra and RespectASO are already doing this.

~2 mo to cross

Daily rank tracking keeps full history per keyword, so a customer who leaves loses the rank changes tied to past metadata edits. Most customers only have a few months of history so far.

To cross it: Offer CSV import of tracked keywords and start tracking straight away. Most indie developers care about current ranks more than past ones.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Apple keyword popularity comes from the public Apple Search Ads API, so any rival can show the same numbers
  • Difficulty scores are proprietary formulas that anyone can build, and Sonar itself admits each tool uses its own scale
  • The MCP server, CLI and Chrome extension are thin layers over the same data
  • Rank tracking means scraping search results daily, which is standard and cheap

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut on price with a permanent free tier, as Applyra does at $9.99 a month and RespectASO does for free
  • Go agent-first: an open-source ASO MCP server that developers run with their own Apple Search Ads credentials
  • Target a niche Sonar covers thinly, such as localization keyword research for non-English markets or Mac App Store and Steam
  • Sell to the indie-hacker crowd through a founder who has a bigger audience on X or YouTube

04/Build against it?

Stay away

The market is full of cheap or free indie ASO tools that all use the same Apple data. Average spend is around $20 a month and churn is high (the founder complains about trial stackers). Enter only if you already have an audience of app developers.
