01/The verdict

iPhone app that scans Magic: The Gathering cards with the camera, shows live TCGplayer and Card Kingdom prices, and tracks a collection. Free with in-app purchases (annual $39.99, lifetime $99.99).

Lotus Scan is a card scanner, a price lookup and a collection list. A clone can copy all three with public card data and price feeds. The App Store page shows only 8 ratings at 3.4 stars. The same developer, Alberto Menendez, also publishes unrelated utility apps. The competitors are much larger: ManaBox has 750k+ iOS downloads and 1M+ Android downloads, and the TCGplayer app has its own scanner.

02/1 moat

~4 mo to cross

The site runs SEO pages: comparisons against ManaBox, Delver Lens and TCGplayer, review pages, how-to guides and a collection-tracker roundup. Reviews are written by the app itself, so the pages are marketing. Their ranking is unproven.

To cross it: Publish a similar set of comparison and guide pages and wait for them to rank, which takes months but needs no special access.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Camera card recognition: apps like Delver Lens and ManaBox already do it, and ML models for it are easy to build or buy
  • Price data: TCGplayer and Card Kingdom prices and Scryfall card data are available through public sources
  • Collection tracking and deck lists: a basic feature that every rival already has
  • The pitch of no white background needed: rivals can add it with a model update

How you'd go after it

  • Offer the scanner free with no ads and no paywall. Lotus Scan has a premium upsell and one reviewer called it spammy.
  • Bundle scanning with deck building and a Moxfield or Archidekt export, as ManaBox does
  • Sell to stores and sellers with bulk scanning and inventory export, which the TCGplayer app only half serves
  • Ship on Android too, since Lotus Scan is iPhone only

04/Build against it?

Stay away

The market is full of free, well-known scanners, and customers can switch with a CSV export. Enter only with an edge, such as a store inventory workflow or a much more accurate scanner.
