Does The All-in One Household Payroll Service have a moat?

Kinda.

30/100 · Shallow moat

“The payroll software is a month of work. A decade of nanny-payroll trust and 500 five-star reviews is slower to copy, and Nannytax has it too.”

01/The verdict

Household payroll service for UK families who employ nannies, cleaners and carers. It handles HMRC registration, payslips, pension and wage payments. Families pay £19 per employee per month plus 1% of gross pay, capped at £49.

Quinn is the rebrand of PAYE for Nannies, so it inherits years of customers and 507 Trustpilot reviews at 5.0, many from families who stayed 10 to 15 years. That trust and the cost of switching payroll providers are real but shallow. Payroll agents need no special licence, and Nannytax, Stafftax and others already sell the same service. Quinn also doesn't seem to have a founder audience, big funding or a distribution engine, though funding is unconfirmed.

02/3 moats

~18 mo to cross

507 Trustpilot reviews at 5.0, many from families using PAYE for Nannies for 10 to 15 years. The service is now quinn, so the reputation carries over. In a category where HMRC mistakes mean fines, families favour a provider with a long record.

To cross it: Run a clean service for several years and collect hundreds of real reviews, or win referrals from nanny agencies and accountants.

Time won't do it

Payroll history, the pension (NEST) enrolment, contracts and the HMRC agent link sit with Quinn. Moving mid-year means P45s and re-registering the scheme. Many families stay for the length of one nanny's employment.

To cross it: Offer free migration and pay the first months of payroll, which Quinn itself does with its three free months promo.

~6 mo to cross

The service promises support from UK payroll experts and handles HMRC filings and wage payments for each household. Staff who know nanny tax rules, such as nanny share allowances, are needed.

To cross it: Hire two or three payroll specialists with HMRC and auto-enrolment experience, or white-label an existing payroll engine.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Payslip, P60/P45 and PAYE calculation, which are standard HMRC-spec payroll features
  • Contract templates, a salary calculator and pension auto-enrolment setup
  • The £19 plus 1% price, which is easy to undercut
  • Blog and cost-guide content on nanny pay

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut on price with a flat fee under £15 a month for a single nanny, aimed at families who find £19 plus 1% expensive
  • Win nanny agencies, au pair platforms and childcare-voucher or tax-free-childcare advisers as referral partners
  • Target a niche such as carers paid by personal budgets or nanny shares, with better tooling than a generalist
  • Rank in SEO for nanny tax and payslip searches with calculators and guides

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

The market has several established providers, and a new entrant needs a wedge. Good options are a lower price, a niche like carers or nanny shares, or an agency partnership channel. Without one, you would be fighting 30-year-old Nannytax on search and trust.
