“A bonding-curve launchpad clones in a weekend. Pulling away the traders and the $2M a day in fees that follow Pump.fun is the hard part.”

01/The verdict

Pump.fun is a Solana memecoin launchpad and trading venue: anyone can launch a token on a bonding curve, and traders pay fees on every trade through the site, PumpSwap, the Padre terminal and the mobile app.

The code is trivial and has been forked many times. What protects Pump.fun is that it is the default place where memecoins launch and get traded, and it has a war chest of more than $1B to defend that spot. Its users are mercenary, though. LetsBonk took about 78% of Solana launches in July 2025, and Pons on Robinhood Chain has out-earned it in daily fees since summer 2026. So the lead is real but has been broken quickly before.

02/4 moats

~6 mo to cross

Creators launch where the traders are and traders watch where launches happen. Pump.fun went back from about 5% to about 90% of Solana launchpad share within two weeks in mid-2025, and DefiLlama showed it earning about $1.98M in a single day in October 2026.

To cross it: Bring an existing community or chain audience (as BONK and Robinhood Chain did) and pay creators and traders more through fee sharing or token incentives until the launch flow moves.

Time won't do it

Its July 2025 PUMP token sale was widely reported to have raised over $1B, and reports count more than $600M of buybacks since. 2026 revenue was about $322M by September, second only to Hyperliquid in one ranking.

To cross it: Get backing from a chain foundation or a community token treasury willing to lose money on incentives for months.

~12 mo to cross

In crypto, 'pump.fun' is the generic word for launching a memecoin. Screeners, bots, KOLs, livestreamers and terminals are built around its tokens, and it owns Padre, a multichain terminal it bought in October 2025.

To cross it: Win the KOLs, Telegram bots and terminals (Axiom and others) to route their flow to your launches first.

~4 mo to cross

Pump.fun runs the whole stack: the bonding curve, PumpSwap AMM, creator fees, livestreams, a mobile app and the Padre terminal, so it keeps fees at every step from launch to graduation.

To cross it: Build or integrate an AMM, a terminal and a mobile app, all of which are standard Solana components.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The bonding-curve launch mechanic and graduation to an AMM are open patterns with dozens of forks.
  • Token creation UI, charts, comments and livestream pages.
  • Fee levels: rivals have repeatedly undercut it or given more back to creators.
  • No customer lock-in: traders and creators move wallets and attention in one click.

How you'd go after it

  • Launch on a new chain with its own retail audience, as Pons did on Robinhood Chain, where Pump.fun has no presence.
  • Use a community token treasury to fund buyback and burn or creator rewards, the playbook that let LetsBonk flip it in 2025.
  • Target a niche Pump.fun handles badly: social and creator tokens (Zora, Bags), or regulated geographies it blocks, like the UK.
  • Sell on safety and fairness: anti-sniper and anti-rug launches, given the RICO class action and the data that 79% of its tokens trade for only one day.

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only worth attacking with a captive audience and subsidy money behind you: a new chain's ecosystem or a community token treasury. A plain clone on Solana ships to nobody against a leader with $1B+ to spend.
