01/The verdict

Subscription streaming of films, series, games and live events, paid for by about 325M households through monthly fees and an ad tier.

An app that plays video is easy to build. What customers pay for is a huge library of exclusive originals and licensed titles, delivered cheaply at scale to 325M paying members. A challenger needs tens of billions of dollars, years of hits and its own global delivery network. Even Disney, Amazon and Apple have not displaced Netflix, which retook the #1 US share spot in Q4 2025.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

2025 revenue was about $45B, with 2026 guidance of $50.7B to $51.7B. That funds roughly $17B+ a year of content, and ad revenue passed $1.5B in 2025.

To cross it: Raise and burn tens of billions on content for years, as Disney, Warner and Amazon are trying, without Netflix's profit base.

Time won't do it

Netflix owns and commissions a large catalogue of originals (Stranger Things, Squid Game, Wednesday) plus licensed films and live events that exist only on its service.

To cross it: Create or buy equally popular franchises and exclusive rights, which takes years and many hits that no one can guarantee.

~48 mo to cross

Open Connect puts Netflix-built appliances inside ISP networks worldwide. Netflix is reported to carry around 15% of global downstream traffic.

To cross it: Build a global CDN, win ISP agreements and tune encoding, which Amazon and Google can do but a startup cannot.

Time won't do it

Netflix is the default name for streaming. It is in the US top spot at about 20% share (JustWatch, Q4 2025) and has 325M paid memberships.

To cross it: Win habit and attention away from Netflix, which has the largest viewing share and the strongest brand in the category.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The app, player, UI and device apps copy in weeks to months
  • The recommendation interface and profiles are standard features
  • Monthly pricing and an ad-supported tier are easy to match
  • The streaming tech itself (DRM, adaptive bitrate) is well-known

How you'd go after it

  • Go niche with one genre or region, such as anime, Bollywood, faith or kids, where Netflix is not the best
  • Bundle with something customers already pay for, as Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Disney+ do
  • Offer free ad-supported or live-sports content, as YouTube, Tubi and Peacock do
  • Undercut on price with a short-season, short-form or creator-led catalogue

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Competing head-on needs billions in content spend and a delivery network. Only niche catalogues or creator-led video with a clear edge are worth trying.
