01/The verdict
A $15 one-time-purchase macOS Tahoe utility that swaps Apple's Sound module in Control Center for a copy that adds a volume slider and output picker for each app. Mac users pay for it.
Per-app volume and per-app output routing are built on Core Audio process taps, which Apple now documents, and dozens of developers have already shipped them. FineTune does both for free and is open source with about 9.9k stars, and GitHub has many more AI-assisted clones aimed at macOS 26. The only new part is replacing the Control Center Sound module, an Accessibility-based trick that a clone can copy in days and that a macOS update could break or that Apple could build in itself.
02/Moats
No moats found. Nothing here would take a good clone longer than 2 weeks.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- Per-app volume sliders via Core Audio process taps: FineTune, Background Music, SoundSource and many GitHub repos already do this.
- Per-app output routing to AirPods, speakers or displays: FineTune does it for free and SoundSource has done it for years.
- The Liquid Glass look that matches Control Center: open-source repos like nnsmbd/sound and FernandoVD/BetterSound already copy the Tahoe style.
- No account, local processing, one-time price: all standard for this category.
How you'd go after it
- Fork FineTune (open source) and add the Control Center replacement, then release it free or for $5. That covers everything this app does, plus EQ.
- Get onto Setapp, or rank for 'volume mixer for Mac' through comparison blog posts, as SoundDial and Fabar are doing. The buyer here searches for a fix and doesn't care which brand they get.
- Support older macOS versions and Intel Macs, which this app drops because it needs macOS 26 and Apple silicon.
- Bundle per-app volume into a wider audio tool (EQ, mic control, stopping call ducking) so this single feature isn't worth paying for on its own.
04/Build against it?
Stay away
There's a well-loved free open-source option, a premium incumbent in Rogue Amoeba, and a new AI-built clone on GitHub almost every week. Apple could also add this to macOS at any time. The only way in is bundling it into a bigger paid utility or a distribution channel you already own.
