01/The verdict

An OpenAI-compatible API gateway that sends each prompt to a cheaper or stronger LLM based on its complexity. Developers and AI teams pay to cut their model bills.

MintRouter sells a classifier plus a proxy in front of public model APIs. Open-source RouteLLM and LiteLLM give anyone that same setup for free, and well-funded OpenRouter and Not Diamond already sell it. Off its own site we found no named founder, no reviews or press, and a GitHub org whose only repo has 0 stars. The only traction claim is '2M+ requests routed' on the homepage, and we could not check it.

02/Moats

No moats found. Nothing here would take a good clone longer than a week.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Its 'one API for every model' is an OpenAI-compatible proxy over public provider APIs. LiteLLM gives you this for free.
  • Routing by prompt complexity can be copied from open-source RouteLLM or a small classifier trained on public preference data.
  • Fallbacks, cost caps, PII redaction and team spend limits are standard gateway features at Portkey, LiteLLM and OpenRouter.
  • Customers switch by changing one base URL, so leaving costs nothing.

How you'd go after it

  • Release an open-source, self-hostable router. Teams that care about cost will choose a free tool they can inspect over an unknown hosted proxy.
  • Publish public benchmarks showing quality kept and cost saved per task type. MintRouter shows no evidence beyond 'up to 50%'.
  • Sell a router tuned for one workload, such as coding agents or support bots, where routing can be tested against real evals.
  • Add routing to an existing gateway or observability tool that already has the customer's traffic, so there is no new vendor to approve.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

OpenRouter has a reported $40M Series A, and Not Diamond, Martian and free open-source routers already cover this. The model providers keep shipping their own auto-routing too. Only try it if you own a channel, such as a large developer audience or a gateway that already handles the traffic.
