01/The verdict
A free, independent alumni app for ex-cadets of Military College Murree (Pakistan). It offers senior Q&A, a marketplace and an entry directory. Nobody pays.
Himalians is a hobby-scale community app for one school. MCM opened in 2008 and enrols about 550 cadets, so the alumni pool is probably a few thousand people. Its only possible edge is network effects inside that closed group, and a volunteer Entry Rep verification chain, but there is no public evidence of adoption. Worse, mcm.edu.pk now promotes an official alumni portal at alumni.mcm.edu.pk, and the existing WhatsApp groups already cover most of the need.
02/2 moats
Shallow
Members are verified by entry and college number, with Entry Reps confirming each cadet. If most entries join, the directory and senior Q&A get more useful with every member. Adoption numbers are not public, and the Android APK is shipped through GitHub releases rather than the Play Store.
To cross it: Get the college or each entry's WhatsApp admins to push a rival, which the official alumni portal is already positioned to do.
Shallow
The verification model relies on a volunteer Entry Rep in each batch to confirm members. That human network takes some organising.
To cross it: Recruit one trusted cadet per entry, roughly 17 batches, or use the college's own records for verification.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- The feature set (tagged help posts, a classifieds board that hands off to WhatsApp, a directory filtered by city and field, entry groups, a gallery, polls) is standard community-app code.
- Verifying members by entry and college number is a simple form plus a manual approval queue.
- Off-the-shelf alumni platforms and Facebook or WhatsApp Communities already offer groups, directories and events for free.
- There is no revenue, no contracts and no data lock-in, so users can leave at no cost.
How you'd go after it
- The official alumni.mcm.edu.pk portal can claim the endorsement and verified roster that only the college holds.
- Run it as a WhatsApp Community with sub-groups per entry, which meets alumni where they already are.
- Build one app for all Pakistani cadet colleges (Abdalians, Alamgirians, Bolanians, Himalians), where an independent app could reach real scale.
- Partner with the ISSB prep and PMA mentoring networks to own the most valuable use case, senior guidance.
04/Build against it?
Stay away
The market is a few thousand alumni of one school who pay nothing, and the college now runs its own portal. Only worth it as a volunteer project, or if you widen it to every cadet college with an official partnership.
