Does heyclicky have a moat?

Kinda.

01/The verdict

A free Mac and Windows app with $20 and $100 plans: a voice-driven AI buddy by your cursor that sees your screen, points at buttons and starts agents. Sold to everyday consumers and learners.

HeyClicky's code gives it no protection. The original repo is public under MIT (7.8k stars, 1.6k forks), and one user had Claude Code build a Windows version in a couple of hours. What it does have is Farza Majeed: 129k followers on X, a Buildspace community of 125k+ builders, and demo videos that reach 3M to 15M views. That gets attention a clone can't buy, but attention is not retention. His own metrics video showed about 20k downloads and 10k monthly users, and ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot Vision already offer screen-aware help for free or as part of plans people already pay for.

02/3 moats

Time won't do it

Farza (@FarzaTV) has about 129k X followers and 37k on Instagram, and previously ran Buildspace. The Clicky launch demo hit about 3M views, a later video passed 15M, and YC promotes his launch-video style.

To cross it: Find a creator with a similar audience who ships in public, or outspend on paid UGC and influencer demos. Most challengers never manage this.

~6 mo to cross

The open-source repo (7.8k stars), Product Hunt #6 of the day, YC's launch posts and press like XDA and Daily Dropout send organic downloads without paid spend.

To cross it: Launch a better-looking open-source fork or a Windows-first version and ride the same 'AI buddy' demo format on X and TikTok.

Funding

Shallow

~3 mo to cross

YC-backed, with about $500K raised and a 2-person team. That buys credibility and network, not a war chest.

To cross it: Raise a normal pre-seed. Anyone with YC or angel access can match this.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The core loop of hotkey, screenshot, voice, LLM answer and an animated pointer. The original code is MIT-licensed and forkable today.
  • Agent integrations with Notion, Google Calendar and Linear are standard OAuth and MCP-style work.
  • The free tier and $20 plan just wrap frontier models that rivals can call at the same cost.
  • There is no stored data or history that locks users in, so leaving is as easy as uninstalling.

How you'd go after it

  • Windows first: HeyClicky started Mac-only and most clones followed it. A polished Windows buddy for the larger non-technical market is a clear wedge.
  • Go vertical. Become the on-screen tutor for one hard tool (DaVinci Resolve, Excel, Figma, Blender), or sell to companies for employee onboarding, where buyers pay per seat.
  • Privacy and local models. Reviewers flag that HeyClicky is cloud-only, so an on-device version wins privacy-sensitive users and IT departments.
  • Bundle it into something people already pay for (dictation like Wispr Flow, or a Raycast-style launcher) so it costs users nothing extra.

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only go in with a specific edge: a Windows-first or enterprise onboarding angle, a single-tool vertical, or your own audience. OpenAI, Google and Microsoft give screen-aware help away inside products people already have, and HeyClicky's one real advantage is Farza's reach, which you can't copy.
