01/The verdict
An iOS, Android and Mac app that exports chosen Apple Health and Health Connect metrics to Markdown, CSV, JSON or Obsidian files on a schedule. Individuals pay $14.99 once for lifetime access.
Health.md reads HealthKit and Health Connect data and writes it out as files. The data APIs are free and documented, and the app's own code is open source on GitHub, so a clone can start from the original. The only real hurdles are an indie developer's small presence in the Obsidian community and the Health Connect permission review on Google Play. Both take weeks, not years, and an older, bigger rival already sells the same exports.
02/2 moats
Shallow
Health.md has a listed Obsidian community plugin (Health.md Visualizations), a free starter vault, YouTube tutorials, and a r/ObsidianMD post with about 38 upvotes. The US App Store shows only 22 ratings (4.8 average).
To cross it: Publish an Obsidian plugin and a template vault, post in r/ObsidianMD, and make a few YouTube walkthroughs.
Shallow
The app needs the HealthKit entitlement on iOS and approval of a Health Connect permissions declaration on Google Play. Both are routine reviews that many apps already pass.
To cross it: Submit the HealthKit app and the Health Connect declaration with a clear privacy policy, then wait a few weeks for review.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- The Markdown, CSV, JSON and Obsidian Bases export formats are simple file writing on top of public HealthKit and Health Connect APIs.
- Scheduled daily, weekly or monthly exports to iCloud, Files or an Obsidian vault.
- The open-source repo hands any challenger the full working codebase.
- The local-first, no-server privacy pitch costs nothing to copy.
How you'd go after it
- Undercut on price: a free app, or a free version of any Obsidian-specific feature, beats a $14.99 unlock.
- Go after AI-agent users with an MCP server or Claude and ChatGPT connectors that query health data live instead of exporting files.
- Pick a narrower niche, like quantified-self users who want Notion, Logseq or Google Sheets sync, or clinicians who need doctor-ready PDF reports.
- Bundle the export as one feature of a bigger journaling or habit app, so users don't need a separate app for it.
04/Build against it?
Stay away
Several export apps already exist, Health Auto Export has been around since about 2016, and buyers pay once for a few dollars. Only go in if you already have an Obsidian or quantified-self audience and can sell it as a feature of something bigger.
