01/The verdict

iPhone medication reminder app that groups pills by prescription, ties doses to meals and, with the paid Doz Pro, sends Critical Alerts that break through Silent mode. Paid by individual patients.

Doz is a solo-built iOS app by Huy Pham, launched recently on Product Hunt. It had 16 App Store ratings at 4.7 and 22 Threads followers when I checked. Grouping by prescription and meal-linked doses are UI and data-model choices a clone copies in weeks. Apple's Critical Alerts entitlement needs approval, but it takes weeks and established rivals already have it.

02/1 moat

~1 mo to cross

Reminders that break through Silent mode rely on Apple's Critical Alerts entitlement, which Apple must approve per app. Doz's approval is likely, since it advertises the feature.

To cross it: Apply for the same entitlement with a health use case and wait a few weeks for Apple's review.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Grouping medications by prescription is a data model and UI choice, copied in days
  • Meal-linked dose timing is simple scheduling logic
  • Critical Alerts, notifications and widgets use standard iOS APIs
  • Free calculators, blog and compare pages can be matched with AI-written content

How you'd go after it

  • Offer a free tier with Critical Alerts included, since Doz paywalls it behind Doz Pro
  • Add caregiver sharing, refill tracking or doctor reports, which a solo indie app may lack
  • Target one condition such as transplant, ADHD or diabetes with tailored flows and community
  • Ship on Android as well, since Doz is iPhone-only

04/Build against it?

Stay away

The category is full of free and cheap apps, including at least four near-identical Doz-named ones. A new entrant needs a specific condition, caregiver or clinic angle to stand out.
