Does Collie have a moat?

No.

01/The verdict

A $19 one-time-purchase Mac writing app with focus mode, a reader mode for notes, automatic revisions and milestones. Bought by individual writers and thinkers who want a calm place to draft.

Collie is a polished side project in one of the most crowded app categories on the Mac. On the Why page, founder Kacper Cygan says it took a couple of weekends of agent-assisted coding and admits it can surely be vibe coded. There's no audience to speak of (his GitHub has 6 followers and no X following turned up), no App Store presence, no sync network and no data lock-in, so nothing slows down a clone or a switch to iA Writer, Bear or Ulysses.

02/Moats

No moats found. Nothing here would take a good clone longer than a weekend.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Focus mode, reader mode with annotations, and auto-saved revisions with milestones are standard text-editor features that agents rebuild in days.
  • The $19 one-time price is easy to undercut. MinimalWriter already sells at $9.99 one-time, and free options like Apple Notes and Obsidian exist.
  • The generated wallpapers and the calm design are taste, not a barrier. Another builder with good taste matches them in a weekend.
  • Documents are personal writing that's easy to export, so users lose little by moving to another app.

How you'd go after it

  • Ship the same calm editor with iPhone and iPad sync. Collie is Mac-only and Apple Silicon-only, and cross-device sync is the main thing Bear and Ulysses charge for.
  • List on the Mac App Store and Setapp, where Collie isn't sold and where impulse buyers of writing apps actually shop.
  • Aim at a niche with a real workflow, like journaling with prompts, engineers' work logs or newsletter drafting, and build the content and SEO around it.
  • Offer a free tier or a lower one-time price to pull in users who compare iA Writer at $49.99 with Collie at $19.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Minimalist Mac writing apps are a saturated, low-price market with entrenched leaders and dozens of weekend clones. Only enter if you already have an audience of writers or a distribution channel like a newsletter or an App Store feature. Otherwise you ship to nobody, the same as Collie does today.
