Flighty
Does Flighty have a moat?
Kinda.

“A flight tracker app takes a few months to build. Matching 159K ratings at 4.8 stars, an Apple Design Award and years of press is the hard part.”

01/The verdict
Flighty is an iOS-only flight tracker for frequent flyers, with delay alerts and predictions and a lifetime flight log. Travelers pay for Flighty Pro, roughly $48 to $60 a year, $300 lifetime or a few dollars a week.
The data Flighty relies on is mostly bought or public: FAA feeds, ADS-B and commercial flight-status APIs. A funded team could rebuild the app, including the ML delay warnings, in a few months. What protects it is reputation and distribution. It won a 2023 Apple Design Award, was an App of the Year finalist, has about 159K App Store ratings at 4.8, and the WSJ called it a must-have. Lifetime flight history adds mild lock-in. It is bootstrapped, iOS-only and has big, well-funded rivals, so a challenger with a real edge can get through.
02/4 moats
Real
Apple gave it a 2023 Design Award and named it an App of the Year finalist. It has about 159K ratings at 4.8 stars, and WSJ, Thrifty Traveler and others list it as the default tracker for frequent flyers. Third-party estimates put it at 100K+ downloads and about $400K in revenue a month, largely from word of mouth and App Store search.
To cross it: Ship a noticeably better app, get Apple to feature it, and spend 1 to 2 years building ratings and travel-press coverage.
Real
Travelers pay because its alerts are known to beat the airlines' own notices, including diversions and the 25-hour 'where's my plane' view. A tracker that misses a gate change once loses that trust fast.
To cross it: Run with no data misses through several holiday travel seasons, and win reviews from travel writers and pilots.
Shallow
Global real-time flight status means licensing commercial data feeds (likely Cirium or FlightAware-style providers) and the FAA SWIM feeds, then merging them into fast push alerts. That costs real money every month, which keeps out hobby clones.
To cross it: Budget for enterprise data licences and spend a few months tuning the alert pipeline before charging users.
Shallow
Flighty Passport stores years of personal flight history and stats, and Flighty Friends links family members to your trips. Leaving means re-importing history and getting family to switch too.
To cross it: Offer one-tap import of Flighty and TripIt history, plus free tracking for family members.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- The UI, Live Activities, widgets and the lifetime stats Passport. All of it can be copied with public iOS APIs.
- The 'where's my plane' inbound-aircraft view and 60-day on-time history, built from data anyone can license.
- Delay predictions from FAA ground stops, weather and late inbound aircraft. These signals are public, and the ML is standard.
- Email and calendar import of flights.
How you'd go after it
- Launch on Android. Flighty has no Android app and 'no immediate plans' for one, so the whole Android market is open.
- Charge less. Forum users complain about the $250 to $300 lifetime price, and App in the Air, the cheaper alternative, has shut down.
- Target regions outside the US, where FAA-based delay predictions are weaker, and build on local airport and airline data.
- Bundle tracking with rebooking help and compensation claims, such as EU261 refunds, so the app earns money for the user.
04/Build against it?
Only with an edge
On iOS you would be fighting an award-winning favorite, along with free tracking from Apple Wallet and airline apps. Only go in with a specific edge: Android-first, a non-US focus, or a compensation and rebooking angle that pays for itself.
