Does Doji have a moat?

Kinda.

27/100 · Shallow moat

“The try-on app is a few months of work. Google gives the same feature away free in Search, and Doji has no network or locked-in users yet.”

01/The verdict

iOS app where users make an AI likeness from selfies, try on real luxury and designer clothes, and shop through affiliate links to retailers. Retailers' affiliate fees likely fund it.

Doji has real money ($14M seed led by Thrive Capital, with Alexis Ohanian's fund) and an ex-DeepMind co-founder building its own diffusion models. But try-on is turning into a free default: Google now runs it inside Search and Shopping. Users can leave at no cost, the founder has about 21K X followers, and no retailer or social network lock-in showed up in my research.

02/3 moats

Time won't do it

$14M seed in May 2025 led by Thrive Capital, with Seven Seven Six (Ohanian's fund) and angels. The team is small, about 1 to 10 people, so the money buys a long runway for model work.

To cross it: Raise a comparable round or ride a free platform like Google Search try-on, which needs no funding to reach users.

~6 mo to cross

Co-founder Jim Winkens is a former DeepMind researcher. Doji says it trains its own diffusion models for avatars and try-on, and app reviews still complain about likeness accuracy.

To cross it: Fine-tune open or hosted image models on a good fashion dataset. Gains are fast and the quality gap keeps shrinking.

Time won't do it

CEO Dorian Dargan (ex-Apple design, Meta, YouNow) has about 20.7K X followers and 10K on LinkedIn. Ohanian posted AI fit pics in beta, which brought early buzz.

To cross it: Find a fashion creator with a bigger audience and tie the product to them.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The core try-on and avatar flow, which many rivals ship (Alta, Zyler, FitRoom, Google Try on)
  • Affiliate shopping links to Net-a-Porter and similar stores, since the app doesn't take payment itself
  • The dark, SSENSE-style brand and UI
  • Pasting a product link to see it on you, which any image-model wrapper can do

How you'd go after it

  • Build try-on into the shopping place people already use (Google Search, ChatGPT, retailer sites), where there's no app to install
  • Sell white-label try-on to luxury retailers, where Doji is a consumer app and DRESSX already sells B2B
  • Offer free or cheaper try-on for mass-market clothes, or a closet-based flow like Alta
  • Win on likeness accuracy and fabric drape, which App Store reviewers say Doji misses on designer pieces

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only with an edge Doji lacks: a fashion audience you already own, or direct retailer deals. A bare try-on app competes with free Google features.
