01/The verdict
Self-hosted analytics that links Stripe, Polar, Dodo and Creem sales to the post or search that brought the buyer. Indie founders pay $49 once.
DataBull launched on X on October 24 as a one-time-payment copy of Marc Lou's DataFast. Within hours Minilytics shipped a free MIT-licensed version, and OpenRev, Talivia and Pixelmoth also sell or give away the same revenue-first analytics. The buyers are developers who use Claude Code, the payment APIs need no approval, and the founder has about 5k X followers, so nothing slows a clone or stops a customer from building it.
02/2 moats
Shallow
Founder Ahmed Gagan (@ahmedgagan11, 18, one exit) has about 5.2k X followers and builds in public. He has sold indie Mac apps before, including 125 licenses in 3 days on one launch.
To cross it: Build in public on X and Threads for a few months, or partner with any indie-hacker account that has a similar audience.
Shallow
Attribution history lives in the customer's own Cloudflare D1 database, so leaving means starting a new history. Customers own that data, though, and could export it.
To cross it: Ship an importer that reads DataBull's D1 tables, the same way DataBull reads DataFast's data-fast-goal and datafast_visitor_id fields.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- The tracking script, referrer attribution and dashboard are standard analytics code that open-source projects like Umami and Minilytics already have
- Stripe, Polar, Dodo and Creem revenue sync uses public APIs and webhooks with no partner approval
- Self-hosting on Cloudflare Workers and D1 is a documented, low-cost setup anyone can copy
- The MCP server and CLI for asking Claude or Cursor about your numbers take a day to add
How you'd go after it
- Give it away as open source on GitHub, as Minilytics and OpenRev did, and win the developers who will not pay even $49
- Offer a hosted version with no install for founders who don't want to run Node 22 and a Cloudflare account
- Add payment providers it skips, like Lemon Squeezy, Paddle, Gumroad and RevenueCat for app makers
- Sell an agency tier with client reports and white-label dashboards, since DataBull already allows unlimited sites
04/Build against it?
Stay away
Free open-source clones already exist. The buyers are developers who can build this themselves. One-time pricing caps revenue per customer. Even DataFast, which has a founder with a huge audience, took 9 months to reach $3k MRR.

- Marc Lou on X: "It took 512 days. This is the hardest thing I’ve done. The analytics market is ultra-competitive, and users perceive data as a vitamin, not painkillers. It took 9 months to grow DataFast to $3k MRR. It was so slow, I thought about giving up many times in the first year. I tried a million things, but these 3 really moved the needle: - I built DataFast for me. I forced myself to ask: “What do I really need?” That’s how the analytics + Stripe angle came up. In other words, I niched down. - I polished the onboarding like a madman once I realized 90% of people who signed up didn’t do anything. Fewer steps, faster AHA moment. You’re a drug dealer, and your users are craving. Give them dopamine ASAP. - I built shareable features. I added 𝕏 mentions on top of the traffic chart, built a real-time map, created a stock market app for analytics, and more. My customers did marketing for me. All I had to do was give them a reason to. The hardest part really is the beginning. Once momentum picks up, you’ve already done the hardest part. For perspective, I'm adding more MRR in 4 weeks than I did in 4 months. I don’t know what’s next, but I like challenging myself, so... See you at $1M ARR 🫡" / X
