“The Zoom translator bot is a 2-week build. Its edge is a few logos like Snowflake and PagerDuty, while Google and Microsoft now ship translation built in.”

01/The verdict

Cuckoo is a real-time AI interpreter bot that joins Zoom, Meet, Teams and in-person meetings, tuned with company glossaries. US tech firms selling into Japan and Korea pay for it.

Cuckoo stitches together off-the-shelf parts: a meeting bot, streaming speech recognition, LLM translation with uploaded documents as context, and a shareable transcript. A capable builder can reach parity in a couple of weeks. Its real assets are a small set of enterprise customers (Snowflake, PagerDuty, Weights & Biases, Grafana) and a $1.8M seed from YC and Korean VCs. Neither one stops a challenger, and the bigger threat is Google Meet, Teams and Zoom shipping native speech translation.

02/2 moats

~4 mo to cross

Logos and case studies from Snowflake, PagerDuty, Weights & Biases, Grafana Labs, ClickHouse and KKday, all won within roughly six months of launch. That helps when selling to other US dev-tool companies entering Japan and Korea.

To cross it: Land 3 to 5 recognizable APAC-expanding tech firms through founder-led sales and publish case studies.

~1 mo to cross

Each customer builds up uploaded decks, API docs, glossaries and meeting history that make translations more accurate over time. The pitch is that it learns your terminology.

To cross it: Offer one-click glossary and document import so a team can rebuild its context in an afternoon.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The meeting bot for Zoom, Meet and Teams is a commodity, available off the shelf from bot APIs like Recall.ai
  • Context-aware translation is just retrieval over uploaded docs plus a glossary in an LLM prompt
  • Shareable live transcripts, industry presets and AI video subtitle localization
  • 20-language support comes free with Whisper-class speech recognition and frontier LLMs

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut on price with generous free minutes, since the HN launch offered only a 60-minute trial
  • Win compliance-heavy buyers first: Cuckoo was still only working toward SOC 2 and ISO 27001 at launch
  • Own a niche Cuckoo doesn't focus on, such as healthcare, legal, factory floors or Spanish and Portuguese LATAM sales, with domain glossaries
  • Ship voice-to-voice dubbing in the meeting instead of captions, ahead of the bundled incumbents

04/Build against it?

Stay away

The core feature is being bundled into Meet, Teams and Zoom. Well-funded specialists like DeepL, KUDO and Wordly already sell to enterprises, so a new standalone translator has little room unless it owns a regulated vertical.
