01/The verdict

Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant and frontier model sold as consumer and team subscriptions, enterprise seats, Claude Code and a pay-per-token API.

The chat interface is easy to copy, and open-weight models like DeepSeek V4, Kimi K2.6 and Qwen 3.6 now power cheap clones. What customers actually pay for is a frontier model, and that takes years of research, gigawatts of compute from Google TPUs and AWS, and a reported $65B+ revenue run rate funding the next training run. The weak spot is switching costs: API customers can move to another model by changing one line of code, so the lead has to be re-won with every model release.

Time won't do it

Training and serving frontier models takes rare research talent, safety and alignment methods, and years of experience. Menlo Ventures put Claude at about 42% share of code generation among developers, roughly double OpenAI's.

To cross it: Hire a top research team and train a model that beats Claude on agentic coding. Only a few labs worldwide (OpenAI, Google DeepMind, xAI, DeepSeek) have managed it.

Time won't do it

Reported raises include a $30B Series G at $380B and a $65B Series H at a $965B valuation in May 2026. Bloomberg reported a run rate above $65B and positive adjusted operating income in Q2 2026.

To cross it: Raise tens of billions on proof of a competitive model, which in practice only hyperscalers and a handful of labs can do.

Time won't do it

Anthropic has multi-gigawatt compute deals: a Google and Broadcom TPU agreement worth tens of billions, plus AWS Project Rainier and up to 5 GW of new Amazon compute.

To cross it: Lock up gigawatts of GPU or TPU capacity years ahead, competing for the same scarce chips and power.

~36 mo to cross

Anthropic reports 300,000+ business customers, and Menlo Ventures estimated about 40% of enterprise LLM API spend in 2025. It has SOC 2, HIPAA-eligible offerings and distribution through AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI.

To cross it: Earn enterprise security reviews, cloud marketplace listings and years without incidents, while matching the model's quality.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The chat UI, projects, artifacts and file upload are a week of work on top of any model API.
  • Coding agent harnesses like Claude Code are copied quickly by open-source tools (Cline, OpenCode, Aider) that can swap in any model.
  • API customers switch models with a config change, so lock-in is low.
  • Consumer subscribers often also pay for ChatGPT or Gemini and move freely between them.

How you'd go after it

  • Sell open-weight models (DeepSeek V4, Qwen 3.6, Kimi K2.6) at a fraction of Claude's per-token price for cost-sensitive agent workloads.
  • Target a vertical such as legal, health or finance with a fine-tuned model plus workflow and compliance that the general assistant lacks.
  • Build a model-agnostic coding agent or IDE that sends each task to the cheapest model that can handle it, which weakens the hold any one provider has on customers.
  • Offer on-premises or sovereign deployments for governments and regulated buyers who can't send data to a US lab's API.

04/Build against it?

Stay away

Competing at the model layer takes billions in compute and research talent. Only build on top of it with a vertical edge such as proprietary data, compliance or a distribution channel the general labs don't serve.
