Does Chatgpt have a moat?

Yes.

01/The verdict

ChatGPT is a general AI assistant for chat, search, coding, writing and agents. Consumers pay $8 to $200 a month, businesses pay per seat, and developers pay for the API.

Anyone can copy the chat app in days. What people actually pay for is a frontier model, plus the compute to serve roughly 900M weekly users. Only Google, Anthropic, Meta, xAI and a few Chinese labs have managed that, and they spent tens of billions doing it. It still loses points because switching is cheap for users: Gemini grew to about 750M monthly users, and Claude grew fast, by offering a similar model in a different app.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

The product depends on OpenAI's own frontier models (GPT series, reasoning models, Codex), which come from years of research and a scarce pool of top researchers. Rivals that matched it, like Google and Anthropic, are themselves frontier labs.

To cross it: Hire a top research team and spend billions training a competitive model, or rent one from a rival lab and accept you can't stand out on quality.

Time won't do it

OpenAI says its Stargate program has secured 10 GW of US data center capacity, including a site in Abilene with Oracle planned for hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GB200 GPUs. That is what serves about 900M weekly users.

To cross it: Lock in gigawatts of GPU capacity and power contracts years ahead, which only hyperscalers and the best-funded labs can do.

Time won't do it

OpenAI closed a $122B round at an $852B valuation in 2026. Annualized revenue was reported at about $50B by late 2026, which funds free use at huge scale and below-cost pricing.

To cross it: Raise tens of billions, or be a cash-rich incumbent like Google or Meta that can give away a similar product.

Time won't do it

ChatGPT is the generic name for AI chat, one of the world's top five most visited sites, and holds roughly 57% to 80% of chatbot traffic depending on the tracker. It also claims 1M+ business customers and 7M+ workplace seats.

To cross it: Ship your assistant pre-installed on billions of devices (Android, Chrome, Windows, WhatsApp), the way Google, Microsoft and Meta do.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The chat interface, projects, custom GPTs and prompt features copy in days
  • Voice, image generation and file chat can be rebuilt on rival model APIs
  • Memory and chat history are mild lock-in. Most users would leave over a better or cheaper model.
  • Price: Gemini comes bundled with Google One storage, and DeepSeek is free

How you'd go after it

  • Go vertical with domain data and workflows, as OpenEvidence did for doctors and Harvey for lawyers
  • Win developers and coders on agent quality, as Claude Code and Cursor have done
  • Sell private, on-premise or open-weight assistants to regulated companies that won't send data to OpenAI
  • Bundle the assistant into a platform people already use every day (Android, Workspace, WhatsApp, Office)

04/Build against it?

Stay away

A general assistant fights OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta, each spending billions. A builder only has a chance with a narrow vertical that brings its own data, compliance or distribution.
