01/The verdict
Booksy Biz is a booking, payments and client-management app for barbers, stylists, nail techs and other beauty pros. Businesses pay about $29.99/month plus per-staff fees and payment processing, and they get listed on Booksy's consumer marketplace.
The software is a standard calendar, reminders and checkout app that a capable builder could match in weeks. What protects Booksy is the two-sided marketplace: reportedly 40M+ consumer users and 140k+ businesses, a consumer app with 25M+ downloads and 1M+ reviews at 4.9 stars, and partnerships with Reserve with Google, Instagram and now Google AI Mode. A barber who leaves gives up their bookable listing and their Booksy reviews. It falls short of 80 because rivals with deep pockets (Fresha, Vagaro, Square, Squire, Treatwell) already compete, so the network is strong but not a monopoly.
02/4 moats
Booksy says 44M clients search its marketplace, and its consumer app reports 25M+ downloads with about 1.06M reviews at 4.9 stars. Third-party sources cite 260M+ appointments and over $10B in GMV in 2024. Many barbers pay mainly because new clients find them there.
To cross it: Fill both sides city by city, for example free software for barbers plus heavy consumer acquisition, and spend tens of millions doing it, as Fresha did.
Real
Each business builds up a client list, booking history, prepayments and public reviews inside Booksy. The reviews and the marketplace ranking don't carry over to a new tool.
To cross it: Offer free migration of client data, import or show old reviews, and give a year free, as Squire's switching offers already do.
Real
Booksy has raised roughly $120M to $200M depending on the source, including a $70M round led by Cat Rock Capital. It was valued at about $580M in 2023 and raised more in 2024 and 2025, plus debt from CIBC. It has also bought rivals such as Genbook and Kiute.
To cross it: Raise a comparable war chest, or go after a niche Booksy underserves where paid acquisition is cheap.
Booksy is a listed Reserve with Google partner, was one of the first with Instagram's Book button, and has a newer Google AI Mode agentic booking integration. Google picks these partners and the slots are limited.
To cross it: Reach enough scale and inventory to qualify for Reserve with Google and Meta booking partner programs, which usually takes months and isn't guaranteed.
03/The gap
Easy to copy
- Calendar, staff scheduling, automated reminders and no-show deposits
- Card payments and checkout through Stripe-style processors
- A branded booking page, SMS and email marketing
- A per-staff subscription price that a free or cheaper tool can beat
How you'd go after it
- Undercut on price: Fresha already wins by charging no subscription and taking a cut of new-client bookings
- Go vertical where Booksy is thin, such as tattoo, med-spa, pet grooming or lash, with features that fit the niche
- Target shops whose clients come from Instagram and word of mouth rather than marketplace discovery, so Booksy's network matters less to them
- Win over barbers who dislike Booksy's fees on new marketplace clients and offer migration plus a year free
04/Build against it?
Only with an edge
Only try this with a niche Booksy underserves or a channel that doesn't depend on marketplace discovery. Competing head-on means fighting a funded two-sided network plus Fresha, Vagaro and Square.
