Does Newsletter Platform: Create Newsletters have a moat?

Yes.

“A newsletter editor is a 2-week build. An ad network paying 60k creators over $1M a month, plus an affiliate army, takes years.”

01/The verdict

A newsletter platform for creators, publishers and businesses that handles publishing, growth and monetization. Revenue comes from SaaS plans (free up to 2,500 subscribers, then paid tiers) plus a cut of its ad network and creator-to-creator Boosts.

The editor, website builder, referral program and paid subscriptions are standard features that a capable builder could rebuild at parity in a few months. What protects beehiiv is a two-sided ecosystem a new entrant can't copy. Around 60,000 active publishers feed an ad network that pays out over $1M a month and a paid Recommendations/Boosts market, backed by about $50M in VC (NEA, Sapphire) and a 50% affiliate program that reviewers keep promoting. Lists and Stripe subscriptions are easy to export, so lock-in is weak, and beehiiv sits in a crowded category next to Substack, Kit and Ghost.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

The beehiiv Ad Network pays publishers more than $1M a month (Variety, 2026), and ads plus creator-to-creator Boosts make up about a third of revenue (Sacra). Brands get reach across tens of thousands of newsletters, and creators can earn from as few as 1,000 subscribers.

To cross it: Sign up enough newsletters to attract advertiser budgets before creators leave because the ad money isn't there yet, which is the classic empty-room problem.

~24 mo to cross

The Partner Program pays 50% of revenue for 12 months, so countless review sites and creator YouTubers rank beehiiv first in 'best newsletter platform' and 'Substack alternative' searches. beehiiv's own blog and comparison pages target those same keywords, and every free-tier newsletter carries its branding.

To cross it: Fund an equally generous affiliate program and years of SEO content, or own a niche channel such as one creator community.

~18 mo to cross

Roughly $50M raised, including a $33M Series B in April 2024 led by NEA. Revenue grew from about $13M ARR (April 2024) to an estimated $30M ARR (mid-2025), which pays for ad sales staff and below-cost free tiers.

To cross it: Raise a comparable venture round on a clear angle, because matching its sales team and free tier out of bootstrapped revenue isn't realistic.

~9 mo to cross

Sending billions of emails with managed domain warming and reputation is a real reason people stay. One review describes a 27k-subscriber publisher who tried self-hosting on Amazon SES and saw deliverability collapse.

To cross it: Build on Postmark, SES or SendGrid with strict anti-spam vetting, and accept months of reputation building and abuse handling.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The editor, templates and hosted newsletter website
  • Referral programs, signup forms, landing pages and basic automations
  • Paid subscriptions with 0% platform fee via Stripe
  • Subscriber lists and paid subscribers export cleanly, so migration only takes days

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut on price for large lists: beehiiv gets expensive at 50k+ subscribers, which MailerLite and Buttondown-style tools already exploit
  • Pick a vertical with its own ad demand and discovery (finance, local news, B2B trade), as the Stocktwits partnership hints at
  • Use an open-source, self-host or data-ownership pitch like Ghost's for publishers wary of a platform's ad cut and rules
  • Target writers who want simplicity and a social feed, where Substack's reader network wins and beehiiv's growth tooling is overkill

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Newsletter tools are commoditized, and beehiiv, Substack and Kit already split the growth-focused creator market. Only go in with a vertical that brings its own advertiser demand or a distribution channel you already own, not a better editor.
