01/The verdict

Beam streams a Mac's screen and sound to an iPhone or iPad, with light remote control. Home users pay $7.99 once to unlock unlimited and remote (Tailscale) use.

Beam is a well-built solo project: ScreenCaptureKit plus a custom pairing protocol, Bonjour discovery and Tailscale for remote access. It is open source under AGPL, needs no servers, and costs a $7.99 one-time fee, so there is no recurring lock-in and no data or network to protect. The category is already full of established remote desktop and streaming apps, many of them free, and an ordinary App Store review is the only barrier.

02/1 moat

Time won't do it

Developer Kevin Erik (@kevinerikjs) got viral attention on X for a GTA 5 iPhone port. That gives him some audience to launch to, but his follower count and how many Beam sales it drives are unconfirmed.

To cross it: Build a comparable dev audience on X or Reddit, or pay for App Store search ads on 'mirror Mac to iPhone' keywords.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • The Beam and Beacon source code and the Phoros wire protocol are public under AGPL-3.0
  • Screen capture, H.264/HEVC streaming, tap-to-click and controller passthrough all use standard Apple frameworks
  • Remote access is handed off to the user's own Tailscale network, so there is no infrastructure to copy
  • The $7.99 one-time price leaves no subscription lock-in or stored data to migrate

How you'd go after it

  • Ship a free, ad-free version funded another way, or bundle it into an existing remote desktop app like Jump Desktop or Screens
  • Add what Beam lacks: Windows and Linux hosts, Android clients, clipboard and file transfer, a full pointer
  • Sell built-in remote relay without making users set up Tailscale
  • Target gamers with a polished Moonlight/Sunshine-style Mac host that has a lower setup burden

04/Build against it?

Stay away

It's a mature, crowded niche where users pay a few dollars once and free open-source options already exist. Only worth it as a feature inside a bigger remote access product.
