No.

“Backbone's timer, invoices and MCP connector are a few weeks' build. sevDesk and Lexware Office already have MCP servers. Nothing here is hard to copy.”

01/The verdict

A €19 to €49 per month back-office app for German and Austrian freelancers and small agencies. It covers time tracking, invoices, dunning, receipt matching and accountant exports, and you can also run it from Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok over MCP.

Backbone is a polished bundle of features that already exist in a crowded DACH market. It has no visible funding, founder audience, reviews or press, and it has no bank-API or DATEV integration: bank statements are uploaded by hand as PDF or CSV. Its AI-chat angle is its main pitch, but open-source and third-party MCP servers already exist for sevDesk and Lexware Office, so that edge is shrinking. The only real friction is the invoice history and the 10-year document retention customers keep in the tool.

02/2 moats

~1 mo to cross

Customers keep their invoice numbering, client rates, time history and receipts in Backbone, and German and Austrian law requires invoices to be kept for about 10 years. It merged two earlier products, Billy and Sort Invoices, so it likely has a small existing user base that moved over.

To cross it: Offer a one-click import of clients, open invoices and receipts, and let users continue their invoice number sequence.

~3 mo to cross

Backbone runs a German SEO content program: free tools such as a late-payment interest calculator, an invoice checker for DE and AT, and an e-invoice (ZUGFeRD/XRechnung) generator, plus blog posts on AI in the back office. No sign that any of these rank well yet.

To cross it: Publish the same kind of free calculator and template pages; sevDesk and Papierkram already dominate these keywords.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Timer, timesheets and turning hours into invoices are commodity features in sevDesk, Lexware Office, Papierkram and Harvest
  • Its MCP connector to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok is a thin layer over its own API. Free open-source MCP servers already exist for sevDesk and Lexware Office.
  • Receipt matching from manually uploaded bank CSV or PDF files, with no live bank connection to rebuild
  • Accountant ZIP export and automatic payment reminders on a schedule

How you'd go after it

  • Undercut it with a free tier for solo freelancers; Backbone's cheapest plan is €19 and there is no free plan
  • Add live bank feeds (via FinAPI or GoCardless) and a DATEV export, both of which Backbone appears to lack, and pitch them to tax advisers
  • Target one niche, such as creators or Austrian freelancers filing taxes through FinanzOnline, with ready-made tax workflows
  • As an incumbent like sevDesk or Lexware, ship an official MCP connector and wipe out Backbone's main selling point overnight

04/Build against it?

Only with an edge

Only go in with a distribution edge, such as an audience of German-speaking freelancers or a partnership with tax advisers. Invoicing for freelancers is saturated, incumbents spend heavily on SEO and ads, and AI chat access is quickly becoming a standard feature.
