Does App Store have a moat?

Yes.

96/100 · Real moat

“A storefront is a weekend build. Reaching 850M weekly users means owning the phone they hold, and the EU's alt stores show how hard that is.”

01/The verdict

Apple's built-in store for iPhone, iPad and Mac apps. Developers pay a $99 yearly fee plus a 15 to 30% cut, and users buy through it.

Building the browse, search and checkout pages is easy. The hard part is that Apple ships the App Store as the default on over 2 billion devices it makes. It reports more than 850 million weekly users across 175 countries, over 2.17 million apps, and $1.3 trillion in ecosystem billings and sales in 2024. The only real cracks come from regulators, not rivals. Even where the EU's DMA forced Apple to allow other stores, they have struggled: Setapp Mobile is shutting down its EU iOS store in February 2026.

02/4 moats

Time won't do it

Apple controls iOS and the hardware, so the App Store comes preinstalled on every iPhone and iPad. Outside the EU, sideloading other stores is still largely blocked.

To cross it: Win a law or court ruling that forces Apple to allow and promote other stores, then get past the warnings and friction Apple adds.

Time won't do it

Over 2.17 million apps on one side, 850M+ weekly users on the other. Apple says developers have earned more than $550B through it since 2008.

To cross it: Persuade big developers like Epic, Spotify and Microsoft to put their main apps on a rival store, which needs huge spending and regulatory help.

Time won't do it

Apple pitches app review and privacy as safety. Many users, and many parents, see apps from outside the store as risky, and Apple's install warnings in the EU reinforce that.

To cross it: Build years of incident-free security and payment handling under a brand users already trust with their money.

Time won't do it

Users' purchases, subscriptions, Family Sharing and Apple ID billing all live inside the store. Developers rely on StoreKit, TestFlight and App Store Connect.

To cross it: Offer refunds or ways to carry purchases over, plus developer tools at parity, so neither side loses history when they move.

03/The gap

Easy to copy

  • Store pages, search, charts and editorial features are standard web and app UI
  • Payment processing is a commodity: Stripe and Paddle can match checkout
  • A review pipeline can be copied with human reviewers and automated scanning
  • Lower fees are easy to offer: Epic takes 12%

How you'd go after it

  • Web checkout: since the 2025 Epic contempt ruling, US apps can link out to cheaper payments, so a challenger can sell payment links that beat 30%
  • Serve EU developers through the DMA rules with a niche store (emulators, adult content, indie games) that Apple's rules exclude
  • Target big-brand developers who already have their own audience and can send users to direct installs or web apps
  • Go after Mac apps, where sideloading is already open and Setapp, Steam and direct downloads compete today

04/Build against it?

Stay away

You would be competing with the platform owner on its own devices. Even with the EU's DMA backing them, alt stores have stayed tiny and some are already closing. Only go in with regulatory leverage or a niche Apple refuses to serve.
